Oscars 2014: Cate Blanchett Wins Best Actress For 'Blue Jasmine', Thanks Woody Allen For Screenplay

Cate Blanchett Mentions Woody Allen This Time

So, Cate Blanchett did - as heavily predicted - win the Best Actress award at this year's Oscars, and, this time round, she did decide to thank Woody Allen in her acceptance speech.

Cate won her gong for her role in 'Blue Jasmine', in a film written and directed by Woody Allen, who has been rejecting allegations made by his estranged daughter that he molested her when she was a child.

Cate Blanchett had trodden a careful path on this subject during Awards Season, during which she has been picking up several gongs for her performance as a New York socialite forced to start again following a scandal around her husband.

After releasing a statement when the claims first came to light that she hoped the family would find resolution, Cate steered clear of the subject altogether at the BAFTAs, preferring to dedicate her award to her late friend Philip Seymour Hoffman.

At the Oscars, however, she gave Woody a significant name check, saying, "Me, in an extraordinary screenplay by Woody Allen. Thankyou so much, Woody, for casting me.

"I’m so proud that Blue Jasmine stayed in cinemas for as long as it did."

She also congratulated her fellow nominees, the Sydney Theatre Company, with whom she has been working, and made an impassioned call for studio execs to realise that films with storylines, no explosions or monsters, still made money - all of which received audible audience approval.
