Seriously Silly Celebrity Baby Names

Celebrities. How they love to dazzle us with their über-glamorous designer clothes, ridiculously opulent homes and, well, rather unusual choice of children's names.

Madonna thought she was being edgy when she named her children Lourdes and Rocco, but her choices are positively tame compared to some of these shockers...

Forbidden fruit

When Coldplay's Chris Martin and Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow got together, we knew the creative couple would produce unique children. What we didn't expect is for them to name their firstborn daughter after a Golden Delicious. And as if Apple Martin wasn't wacky enough, their second child, a boy, was named Moses.

Tabloid royalty

If Katie Price and Peter Andre's daughter ever wants to keep a low profile, she might struggle with a name like Princess Tiaamii. Pronounced 'tee-ah-me', the name was created in honour of Pete's mum Thea and Katie's mother Amy. When the baby was born, Pete commented: 'Katie always loved the name Princess but everyone thought it was a bit over the top.' Over the top? Katie Price? Never.

A very novel name

When it comes to unusual baby names, the six-strong Pitt-Jolie brood can't go without a mention. Much as we love Maddox, Pax, Zahara Marley, Knox and Vivienne, Shiloh Nouvel, the couple's first biological baby, is our favourite. Shiloh is a name of Hebrew origin meaning 'gift' – and if Brad and Angelina have passed on their good looks to their little girl, the name seems quite apt.

Cruise out-of-control

Suri might sound like the kind of cool name befitting the offspring of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, but for an internationally-famous couple, some research would have come in handy. Unfortunately, according to a British translation company, Suri means 'pickpocket' in Japanese, 'turned sour' in French, and 'horse mackerels' in Italian. Oops!

A New York State of mind

It's a popular (ahem) misconception that Brooklyn Beckham was named after the place in which he was conceived. In her autobiography, Victoria writes: 'I had always liked the name Brooke and then we suddenly thought about Brooklyn. It was only afterwards that I realised how appropriate it was because it was in New York that I found out I was pregnant.' So now you know.

Rock on

Gwen Stefani certainly pushes boundaries when it comes to fashion and music - but in naming her second son Zuma Nesta Rock, she proved that she is pretty deft at 'cutting-edge' baby names too. The little boy was most likely named after Malibu's famous Zuma Beach, and Nesta was Bob Marley's middle name; (Gwen and husband Gavin Rossdale are big fans).

Material girl

Geri Halliwell decided to name her daughter in honour of a pretty flower - and her favourite raunchy popstrel. She came up with Bluebell Madonna, which doesn't sound daft at all. 'No-one else has that name, apart from the Virgin Madonna and the singer, whom I love,' Geri said at the time. We have a sneaking suspicion that there might be a few other Madonnas out there – but don't tell Geri!

Super-baby

Do you think Nicholas Cage (real name Nicholas Coppola) might be taking his love of comics too far? Not only is his own stage name inspired by Marvel Comics' superhero Luke Cage (we haven't heard of him either), when his son was born he bestowed the name Kal-El upon him. If you've ever seen the Superman films (or Smallville) you'll know that Kal-El is Clark Kent's real Kryptonian name.

My name is...Pilot Inspektor

Reportedly, My Name is Earl's Jason Lee, picked the name Pilot for his son because he likes the Granddaddy song, 'He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot' – doesn't sound like much of a compliment to his firstborn, does it? As for Pilot's middle name – 'Inspektor' – the mind boggles. Maybe it's connected to Jason's allegiance with the Church of Scientology...bet he'll never tell.

Hard-hitting herb

I suppose if you're Sylvester Stallone, the idea of calling your kid Sid or Stanley isn't all that appealing – but Sage Moonblood seems a little bit over-the-top, even for Rocky. Still, born in 1976, Sage is an actor in his own right now and hasn't changed his name, so perhaps his unusual handle was a gift, not a punishment.
