Nintendo Says N64 Games Are Coming To The Wii U

Nintendo's New Plan To Save The Wii U Is... The N64.
This is the first console we bought on our own. It was ours. We didn't get it as a gift and we didn't have to share it with anybody.

Nintendo is one of those few companies where nothing ever changes - and nothing ever dies. Not Mario, not Princess Peach, and not old consoles.

(Except maybe the Virtual Boy).

The latest evidence is the news via CVG that Nintendo appears to be ready to bring N64 games to the Wii U virtual console.

It is already possible to play N64 games on the Wii U (or rather via the Wii U) by loading the original Wii menu and buying/playing them through the older eShop.

Until now however the classic 64-bit Nintendo titles Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and Smash Bros have been missing from the new eShop. They also lack features like playing the games on the second-screen Gamepad and customising the controls.

Not for much longer. The eShop page has been updated to reference N64 games as well as SNES, NES and GameBoy Advance titles.

"Check back regularly for the latest releases, including the future addition of titles from the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 systems," it says.

There's no word on when the games will arrive, but we think we have a hunch: Nintendo prefigured the release of Mario Kart 8 by releasing the classic Super Mario Kart for SNES. Next autumn it releases Super Smash Bros -- could it be ready to re-release the older version with the same name via the eShop? We shall have to wait and see...
