SpaceX Admits It Wants To Colonise The Solar System

Billionaire inventor Elon Musk's private space company has admitted it has designs on colonising the Solar System within 100 years.

SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said in a radio interview that the company wants to make the human race "multiplanetary".

Shotwell said that by 2100 (or 2200 at the outset) SpaceX will be the "most widely used space transport company in the... let's call it the Solar System".

Nasa has traditionally been the world's primary breaker of exploratory boundaries since the Moon landings of the late 1960s and 70s. But since it is currently reliant on Russia for sending astronauts to the space station -- and SpaceX (and others) for sending cargo to the orbiting platform -- you wouldn't bet against a private company taking on the mantle in decades to come.

Shotwell even said that "it would be great if it were in the galaxy" -- though the distances involved suggest that might a bit too ambitious even for the humans of centuries to come.
