A man is fighting to have his pregnant wife taken off life support even though it would mean their unborn baby would also die.

Erick Munoz, from Fort Worth, Texas, said his wife Marlise, 33, would not have wanted to be in a coma and reliant on a machine to live.

Erick fought in vain to save his wife after he found her collapsed on the kitchen floor in November after she suffered a pulmonary embolism. She hasn't regained consciousness since.

The life of the unborn baby, which may have already suffered irreparable damage, now hangs in the balance and Erick said doctors should fulfill her wishes - which would end the lives of both his wife and their unborn child. The couple have a one-year-old son Mateo.

But in Texas, doctors must take all life saving measures to preserve the life of an unborn baby, which in this case remains too immature to survive outside the womb.

That means doctors' hands - along with Erick's - are tied.
