An 11-year-old girl has been arrested after stabbing her sleeping mother nine times in the head, neck and shoulder.

The girl told police she that she attacked her mother as she was 'so, so angry and frustrated with her'. Incredibly the mum survived but is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The horrific incident happened in Dallas, Texas, on Friday night.

It is believed to have been sparked when single mum-of-two Toshia Edmonson, 41, pushed her unnamed daughter onto a sofa and told her that she was going to 'give her away.'

The girl then waited for her mother to go to sleep, got a knife from the kitchen, went to her bedroom and stabbed her nine times.

Local news reported that Toshia's other child, a younger boy, told police that his mother woke up screaming and shouting her daughter's name.

The mum was eventually able to get the knife out of the 11-year-old's hand and fall on top of her to stop the attack.

The boy discovered both his mother and sister covered in blood and ran out into the hallway. A neighbour then called the police.

The girl has been charged with family violence aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
