Girl Suspended From School For Writing Romance Blog

A girl has been suspended from her school in Saudi Arabia for an entire term for writing a romance blog.

The girl was said to have been inspired by the Girls of Riyadh novel, and started her own web-based musings under the pen name 'Mashael'.

Her school found out about the blog and claimed the posts 'revealed too much' and suspended her from classes.

The Arab News reports that the girl insisted her stories were made up, despite some of her readers believing them to be real.

The Arabian Business website says the stories are 'similar to the controversial 2005 fictional book by Rajaa Alsanaea, Girls of Riyadh, which explores the personal lives of four young Saudi women'.

'Mashael' is said to have got such a following from her blog many of her fans took to Twitter to criticise her suspension.

One student told the Arab News:

"It was a great read and it entertained us but the sad part is that it ended without an ending to her story. We enjoyed reading how life is for a teenager in Riyadh."
