Gwyneth Paltrow And Chris Martin Split: Coldplay Frontman Opens Up About Why Their Marriage Broke Down

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's separation announcement in March was a shock for many of their fans, especially as they seemed to have one of the most solid marriages in showbiz.

However, after revealing on the actress' lifestyle website Goop that they had made the decision to "consciously uncouple", there has been little news from the pair about what happened or how they plan to move forward.

Until now. In a very open and revealing interview with Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe - which will be broadcast in full this evening (April 28) - Martin has insisted his own personal issues played a huge part in the breakdown of their marriage.

He said: "About two years ago I was a mess really because I can't enjoy the thing that we are good at and I can't enjoy the great things around me because I'm burdened by this. I've got to not blame anyone else and make some changes.'

'I wouldn't use the word breakdown, this was more a realisation about trying to grow up basically."

Martin, 38, went on to suggest how he plans to change going forward and hinted the split was down to his attitude towards relationships.

He said: "If you can't open yourself up, you can't appreciate the wonder inside. So you can be with someone very wonderful, but because of your own issues you cannot let that be celebrated in the right way.

"What changed for me was - I don't want to go through life being scared of it, being scared of love, being scared of rejection, being scared of failure."

As well as talking about his marriage, the Coldplay frontman revealed he decided to open up to Lowe because he loved his now infamous interview with Kanye West.

He also added, on a lighter note, that he's a big One Direction fan.

'Their songs are great," he said. "I'm saying One Direction are brilliant and I'm not kidding. You know why? Because their songs are really good and I don't think that any of them are going to go solo. I think they appreciate their chemistry from watching their movie."
