Mel C Is Celebrity Mum Of The Year

Mel C has been named Tesco Celebrity Mum of the Year at a star-studded awards ceremony in London.

The singer - who is mum to four-year-old Scarlet - said she was 'really chuffed' to have scooped the gong at the event at the Savoy Hotel.

Speaking about the challenges of combining working and parenting, Mel, 39, admitted that her current role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of Jesus Christ Superstar meant a lot of juggling.

"It brings a whole new set of problems with the jigsaw puzzle of childcare and the guilt you feel from being away," she said. "So that's interesting and it's something you're constantly working on, getting the balance right."

Another Tesco Mum of the Year winner was Margaret Aspinall, who has campaigned for more than 20 years for justice following the Hillsborough football disaster.

Mrs Aspinall lost her 18-year-old son James during the tragedy. She picked up the Campaigning Mum of the Year title, while 52-year-old Anna Kennedy scooped the Achieving Mum of the Year award for her work with autistic children.

Anna, from Uxbridge, Middlesex, re-mortgaged her home to set up a school for autistic children after her own two autistic sons were turned away from mainstream education.

The Courageous Mum of the year accolade went to Claire Lomas, 32, who got married, had a baby, walked the London Marathon in 16 days and raised £200,000 for charity despite being paralysed from the chest down after a riding accident in 2007.

The awards ceremony will be aired on Channel 5 on Mother's Day, March 10.
