Met Gala: The Craziest Dresses Ever Seen On The Costume Institute Red Carpet

Before the Charles James 'Beyond Fashion' Costume Institute Gala takes place on 5 May, it's worth remembering just how daring the A-list can be with their dress choices. Statement-making? You bet. It's the fashion industry's most prestigious event, after all

Last year's 'PUNK: Chaos to Couture' exhibition inspired some of the most dramatic gowns ever seen on the Met Gala red carpet. And Beyonce's Givenchy design (with matching knee-high boots and slick black gloves) was most definitely one of the highlights.

Though she's not the only one to choose a dress with a long train and a spot of sparkle. In recent years there's been a trend for tulle, sequins and serious ruffles. Oh, and capes? They're a big deal at the Met. (Former Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley proved he was king of the style in 2007.)

As the Charles James exhibit is all about celebrating couture, we can expect styles to be just as grand, but they'll have an elegant twist in 2014.

With Kim Kardashian, Lupita Nyong'o, Margot Robbie and Zoe Saldana amongst the stars on the guestlist, the red carpet style is set to be better than ever.
