You'll Never Guess What America's Favourite Food Is

When it comes to America's national dishes, burgers, fries and pancakes covered in maple syrup have always been firm favourites.

But eating habits are changing across the pond. As Business Insider reports, the NPD group, a consumer market research company, studied consumers' diet choices in February 2014 and compared the results with data from February 2004.

This has resulted in a list of the top 10 most popular foods and unsurprisingly, those that are quick and easy to turn into a meal ranked highly.

"We are still leaving the cooking to others," said NPD vice president Harry Balzer. "With restaurant visits down, the manufacturers of our foods are filling more of the need."

So, was it all fast-food and ready meals? Not exactly. While pizza, chicken sandwiches and Mexican food (yum) made the shortlist, it was yoghurt that took the number one spot (Americans consume the dairy product at least twice a week.)

1. Yoghurt

2. Bottled water

3. Pizza

4. Poultry sandwiches

5. Mexican food

6. Fresh fruit

7. Cereal and granola bars

8. Ice cream sandwiches (yes, really)

9. Crisps

10. Pancakes

In other food-related news, new research suggest comfort food isn't actually comforting (sob.)

Research published in the Health Psychology journal suggests that eating nothing has the same effect on a bad mood as indulging in your favourite treats.

Somehow, we don't think this study will stop anyone from enjoying one of these every once in a while.
