The heart-stopping moment a buggy with a toddler strapped inside rolled onto railway tracks has been caught on CCTV.

The young child was sitting in the buggy at the railway station in Diamond Creek, Melbourne with a man who is believed to be her grandfather.

The man turns away from the buggy momentarily, before it rolls towards the edge of the platform and onto the tracks.

The man realises what has happened a moment too late, and darts onto the tracks to rescue the child.

He is then joined by several members of the public who help lift the child and her buggy back onto the platform.

Thankfully, no trains came through the station during the incident.

The toddler was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital with facial injuries and is said to have had a minor nose fracture.

Speaking about the incident, Metro spokeswoman Larisa Tait said:

"This is a really awful experience for anybody to go through, and we're relieved to hear the little girl sustained only minor injuries and wasn't more seriously hurt.

"We can't stress enough how important it is to make sure the brake is on and to never look away. It also shows how important it is to strap children in."
