The Rise Of The Grey Hair Trend

The Rise Of The Grey Hair Trend

While many of us reach for the hair dye as soon as we spot a grey hair, there are a handful of ladies out there who are embracing the silver shade.

It all started a few years ago, when Jean Paul Gaultier sent models with huge grey beehives down the catwalk at this Autumn/Winter 2011 show. A year later Kelly Osbourne was seen showing off her silver locks on the People's Choice Awards red carpet, before grey hairstyles from Rihanna and Rita Ora soon followed.

Of course, there were a few early adopters of the trend. Lady Gaga has been experimenting with grey since 2010 (along with black, blonde and pink) while American model Kristen McMenamy has been proving grey is glamorous for years.

Even Kate Moss briefly tried out silver highlights in 2012. (These subtle grey streaks are more manageable way of attempting to take on the look.)

The latest celebrity fan? Zosia Mamet, the 26-year-old actress best known for playing Shoshanna Shapiro in Girls, has swapped her natural brown hair for grey.

So, thinking of trying the look yourself? We asked Tori Durbridge, the colour technical at Easton Regal salon, for her advice.

"Highlights could be the best option for a softer more natural finish," says Tori.

"When you speak to your colourist you need to ask their advice on how light you should go, you don't want to go too light that the natural hair that is left is then most visible."
