Make sure your kids don't get carried away playing on escalators.

That's what happened to this little girl in a nail-biting clip that shows the danger of letting children wander around a shopping centre without proper supervision.

Caught on CCTV, the girl – who looks about four years old - gives her parents the fright of their lives as she goes for a ride on an escalator handrail.

The footage shows her wandering towards the moving staircase as shoppers chat away, oblivious. She then runs her hands along the handrail, just like we all used to do when we were kids.

But the video then shows the shocking moment she decided to take her adventure one step further - and go for a ride on the handrail.

After checking to see no-one is watching, she lifts herself off from the ground and down the side of the escalator.

Thankfully, shoppers run to her rescue and she's lifted away before she gets hurt.

But it was a lucky escape: only last week, a four-year-old boy was taken to hospital after he fell 40 feet from the second floor to the first floor from an escalator in an Indianapolis shopping centre.

Witness Auvon Chandler said: "I heard this sound that I can't even describe. It was terrible I heard him hit the ground. In the process of falling, and then hit the ground.

"Like I said I just can't describe the sound that it made. It was terrible..and I just saw him laying there. Completely lifeless on the floor."

The boy – who is still seriously ill in hospital - was apparently running around the store playing with other children and then started riding up the side of the escalator when he fell.
