Meet Disney's First Ever Latina Princess

Meet Disney's First Ever Latina Princess

Princess Elena of Avalor is Disney's first ever Latina princess and she's set to make her debut appearance during a special episode of Sofia the First next year.

And we thought Emma Watson being cast as Belle in the Beauty and the Beast remake was exciting.

Princess Elena will star in her own animated series, Elena of Avalor, which will premiere in 2016.

So what's this Latina gal like? Elena is described as "bold, caring, funny and clever... a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairytale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore."

In a statement following the announcement Nancy Kanter, executive VP and general manager of Disney Junior Worldwide, said "Our creative team has delivered a universal story with themes that authentically reflect the hopes and dreams of our diverse audience."

"What excites us most is the chance to use distinctive animation and visual design to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairy tale."

Another Disney princess on the scene? We just love this.
