This Terrifying Vortex Could Swallow You And Your Boat In Seconds

The whirlpool is a sight that has struck fear into the eyes of sailors for years sucking up entire ships in seconds. They've been a puzzlement to scientists and a source of inspiration for map-makers all over the world.

Well this swirling vortex is actually man made, and can be found at the top of the Denison Dam in Lake Texoma, USA.

Over 8-foot in diameter, the vortex is actually created when flood waters are released from the reservoir via flood control gates.

While it's not as big as the kind of whirlpools you'll find in the ocean, the power behind this vortex is such that it'll consume most small ships without even batting an eyelid.

There's an important reason behind this phenomena however and that's protecting the land surrounding the dam. North Texas has recently been suffering from an usually high level of rainfall recently causing flash-flooding all over the state.

The whirlpool you're seeing then is actually the dam working at full capacity to try and drain lake Texoma. Tulsa District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have been working around the clock to try and keep the dam at full capacity while the weather remains so wet.
