Murphy's Law And Motorcycling

Sod's Law, otherwise known as Murphy's Law, clearly states that "If something can go wrong, it will". Nothing proves this like motorcycling. The possibilities are endless for something to go wrong, usually just when you need it least.

Sod's Law, otherwise known as Murphy's Law, clearly states that "If something can go wrong, it will". Nothing proves this like motorcycling. The possibilities are endless for something to go wrong, usually just when you need it least.

You know you've been hit by Sod's Law when:

1) You are stuck in a traffic jam for ages and it looks like going nowhere. So you turn off the engine to save petrol... just as it starts moving.

2) You pull away and find your mirrors have been moved. So you decide to sort them out at the next set of lights... only to rack up your personal record of 27 green lights in a row.

3) Visiting a town you've never been to before, you reach a junction and don't know which way to turn. So you flip a mental coin... only to find you've made the wrong choice, spend the next 10 miles going round the worst one-way system you've ever experienced to get back to where you were to begin with... and find the Guesthouse you are staying at is just 20 yards in the other direction.

4) You decide to clear out your old kit. So you throw away all your old, smelly (but still serviceable) gloves... and promptly lose one of your lovely new pair.

5) You decide to throw out your old, smelly (but still perfectly serviceable) jacket... and the day after the zip goes on your new one.

6) You never ride down the inside of traffic. But this day you're in a hurry and against your better judgement decide to do so... and a nail goes right through your tyre.

7) You sell your old bike to a dealer, so decide to take it for one last long ride before handing it over... and the engine blows up.

8) You get an amazing deal on your insurance, hand over the money and only after the policy starts do you find out they've put you down to ride no more than 2,000 miles a year or less... and you are a Despatch Rider.

9) You ride to a bike show and park your bike right under the 'Parking Zone' sign, ... only to come back later in the day and find the sign has fallen down, you have no idea where you parked and 263 identical bikes have parked in the same area.

10) Being security conscious, despite going back out in a few minutes, you park you bike in the garage, close the door... and hear a 'ping' as the cable to the garage door snaps and your bike is trapped inside... and then find your front door key is in there as well.

As someone who has been affected by Sod's Law (not all of the above happened to me, but enough of them did), I recommend not thinking too much about it, otherwise another law, 'Zymurgy's First Law of Evolving System Dynamics' comes into play:

"Once you open a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is to use a larger can."
