Why are British hotels so expensive? I was in Edinburgh one night (£80 bad) then went to Venice) £50 per night for annex suite overlooking canal in Dorsodura). Another time Newcastle £85 (Concrete box) then on to Bergen £35 a night (Deco building, self-catering). And so on.

Because the GBP has depreciated in value dramatically and it's only when you come up against direct comparisons between similar things bought it different countries do you notice how low the vaue of £1 has become. And then you begin to ask why, if Greece is in trouble, Spain is in trouble, Ireland is in trouble and the French and Germans are hanging on by the skin of their teeth, the GBP is still 15% short of its 2006 level against the Euro.

I suggest that the conclusion you might reach, if you had to go out shopping in any Euro zone country, is that despite the propoganda of the far right wing rags called the "press", is that Merkel and Hollande might have problems, but by comprison with Osborne and Cameron they are giants amongst able politicians.

By way of aside, you might also notice that although the rags have characterised Cameron as striding from European capital city to European capital city, dispensing his Tory economic wisdom and his much respected veto to an adoring European populace. Hollande can't be even bothered to meet the creep and the US thinks he's lightweight.

Bless.
