I was going to write a 'great places to go this summer' feature, but I'm a parent, I know the reality. There's actually a whole year spreading out before us, full of half term breaks, the occasional non-pupil day, a vast summer vacation and plenty of sneaky bank holidays.

Rambling In Southwest Crete

This southern coast of Crete is far more rugged than the north. In some places the mountains come so close to the Libyan Sea that there's no room for a road inbetween, and a few villages are only accessible by boat or footpath, or by one road in and out.

As we drive higher and higher into the White Mountains of Crete, leaving behind our hotel in the busy resort of Paleohora, I start to realise the immensity of what we're about to do: walking the Samaria Gorge.

Sure enough, as I step foot inside Daios Cove the wow factor hits. Nestled in a tranquil private sandy bay, a short ride from the bustling town of Agios Nikolaos, a wall of floor to ceiling windows creates a stunning elevated panoramic of the crystal clear turquoise waters and rugged cliffs that don the bay.

Whilst these nutrient-rich dishes are great for your physical health they play a massive role in your mental wellbeing too. In Crete family meals are not just for Christmas and you'd be hard pressed to find a local who doesn't hold them up as an important occasion to share in love, life and olive oil.

When I think of Crete I think of warmth. Not the perennial warm climate, nor the clear warm waters of the Aegean Sea, but the warmth of its people. Crete has long been on my top ten list, not least because of my mother's creative thinking when she decided to call me Ariadna, in line with the ancient Greek mythology. I felt like it was about time to go back to the "roots" and took a trip to this popular destination.

Why Go Camping?

Hiking and camping isn't so simple. It has taken me a month of trial and (mostly) error to realize that I didn't need to bring anything at all. I could have bought everything I needed in the camping shop by the bus station in Chanea, Crete's main port, where I did in fact buy an excellent sleeping bag and mat.
