The Cup and Rings Godello 2013, Galicia, Spain
From a winemaking project between Scotsman Norrel Robertson MW and the winery of Terras do Cigarron, in Monterrei, Galicia in the northwest of Spain. The Cup and Rings is an ancient, prehistoric, carved stone design commonly found in Galicia and in Norrel's original home of Scotland. Fermentation is mainly in stainless steel with 20% fermented in old, large French oak barrels. It exhibits a light smokiness and almond note and the the full juiciness and melon rind richness of the Godello which is very charming, with a lovely squirt of lemony juiciness and salt on the palate. There is a layer of stones and minerals from that cool Atlantic coast over the pithy acids. Watch the video for my full review, including much more detail and food matching suggestions.
