W: When Is The Right Time To Wean?

The official guidance is that you shouldn't give your baby food until she is six months old. However, some parents may decide to start weaning at four months, or they may be advised to do so.

It isn't a good idea to wean before four months as there is evidence that this could lead to an increased risk of allergies, asthma or eczema.

If you plan to wean before six months, do make sure you speak to your health visitor.

If you are lucky there might be a regular weaning talk in your local area. You can go along for helpful tips and advice.

There are some typical signs that can indicate your baby is becoming ready for solids.

Can she hold her head up? Can she sit up unsupported? Does she seem interested when you are eating food, and has she tried to put things into her mouth?

Some babies have their first taste of food when they steal a tasty morsel from mummy or daddy's plate!

Your baby might also make chewing motions, which shows that she is learning how to move food from the front of her mouth to the back, ready to be swallowed.

If you think your baby is raring to go with some lovingly mashed up vegetables, good luck, and try not to worry too much about the ensuing mess!
