Hospital Delivered 'Birth Congratulations' Letter To Couple On The Day Their Son Died

A couple received a 'birth congratulations' letter from their hospital on the day their one-day-old son died. The letter was sent by mistake when it was automatically created by a computer.

Matthew Broughton and Lorna Howell became parents to Alex Broughton on December 2nd 2009, but he sadly died a day later. Obviously the arrival of a letter congratulating them on the birth of their son would only have added to the horrific grief a parent feels when they lose a child.

At an inquest into the boy's death, Midwife Sue Mahoney, the ward shift leader on that particular night, has said "I do apologise for that"

The baby boy had severe bran damage, and was floppy and not breathing when born in a birthing pool. The further attempts to revive him failed.
