A 53-year-old woman threw a toddler to his death from the seventh floor of a New York apartment block on Tuesday night.
Xiao Aiu Cai is believed to have hurled two-year-old Jerry Zhou from the window of the apartment. She was described by authorities as 'very depressed' and in an hysterical state.
The incident occurred in the New York district of Flushing at around 8.30pm on Tuesday.
It is claimed that Xiao Cai was living with the boy and his mother, but is not a member of their family. She is said to have recently been involved in a dispute with her own daughter.
Detectives say that shortly after the child was thrown to his death, witnesses heard Xiao Cai screaming and being hauled back from the same window as she attempted to throw herself out.
According to WCBS news, Jerry's mother was in the apartment when the incident happened. Witnesses said she ran to the sidewalk where her son lay dying.
Xiao Aiu Cai was arrested and carried into the back of an ambulance with her arms strapped to a wheelchair. She is undergoing psychiatric tests while being held.
Neighbours said police had been called to the apartment before because Cai had previously shown signs of mental illness.
