Mum Gives Birth At Theatre

A pregnant woman astounded theatre-goers by going into labour in a private box in Vienna's Burgtheater and staggering down to the foyer where she dramatically gave birth to a baby boy.

Onlookers watched in amazement as the mum-to-be - whose identity has not been revealed - began to complain of pains during a performance of Racine's Phedre.

After making an agonising walk down to the entrance hall, the woman delivered her son with the help of the theatre's chief usher and house doctor.

Matthias Hartmann, the theatre's director, congratulated the new mum and said it was a 'good omen before Christmas, when a child is born in a theatre.'

Hartmann promised the baby boy a free subscription to the theatre 'as soon as he's ready to enjoy it.'
