The lowdown: Freelance writer Virginia Sole-Smith set up the Beauty Schooled blog to highlight the human cost of the beauty industry. She has immersed herself in salon life, spending hundreds of hours learning the fine arts of waxing, applying make up and cleansing in order to share her experiences and insights with her readers.

What we love: Beauty Schooled offers a rare look from the other side of the waxing table, collecting a wide variety of anecdotes and information in a hugely accessible format - the politics of tipping, whether to heed a parental request to wax a 13-year-old, and the Pretty Price Check - a roundup of the week's fascinating beauty figures.

Look out for: Virginia is about to take part in the '6 Items or Less' experiment which challenges participants to choose six (and only six) items of clothing to wear for a month. As a self-confessed clothes addict, the idea is for her to embrace creativity with just a few key pieces instead of simply acquiring more.
