China is the home of many a sport. Famous for its martial arts from Kung Fu to Tai Chi, the eastern country is also the provenance of dragon boat racing and, arguably, soccer.

But men in Beijing have been eschewing these traditional pastimes in favour of what has up to now been considered a more feminine pastime.

The stigma of pole-dancing has been steadily dropping in the Chinese capital, as more and more men discover what an effective method it is of gaining a stronger, more supple physique.

These young men are trying to keep fit and all you do is ridicule them... I just don't understand why citizens of the USA have to do this? Why do we prejudge them for staying fit? Personally I think staying fit is a good thing.

Lots of girly men in China!

Why do you feel the need to prejudge these young men? Just because they don't fit your stereotypical definition of what a man from the USA should be like? Let me tell you that your definition of what a man should look like makes up for about 10 percent of men in the world.

Yet another prejudgement... what they are doing isn't sexual and you put sex into it, why?

This is sad that China tends to imitate so much more of the tainted aspects of western culture more than the respectable aspects. I'm afraid the next generation of Chinese will cause the downfall of Chinese cultural values.

Yeah I agree pole dancing has a hyper sexualized relationship coming from the west. I find it ridiculous that many women will do it and say its just exercising albeit wearing 6 inch stilettos, skimpy outfits, and doing some of the most blatant sexual poses. I feel like these Chinese men are approaching it in a non sexual way and I can see it in their clothing, demeanor, and how they talk about it. But still I don't think its easy for people to separate pole dancing/exercise from strip club. There is just too much out there that will always put those two things together and I feel like there are other things you can do that work your body out. Gymnastics, pilates, yoga. Whatever happened to good ol kung fu! Hello!

Pole exercise would work for young and in-shape kids and men and women, but it would be much too physically challenging for someone old and out-of-shape like me. The most vigorous physical challenge old folks could muster would be a beginner rock climbing wall with plenty of soft, sponge rubber at its base. :-)

At just under 50, I prefer to limit my exercise to lifting heavy mugs of beer.

Not a health life style. I know of a 59 year old man that just completed RAGBRAI (7 day bike ride across the state of Iowa.) I know of a 67 year old man that bench-presses 250 lbs for an hour everyday at the local Y.

I'd give it a go! It looks physically challenging!

Most boys and young men love climbing polls trying to get to the top Looks like a great workout. Why should it be just for women. Good for these Chinese men to be secure enough in their masculinity to appreciate the fun and benefits.
