World's Largest Stop-Motion Film Made On A Camera Phone

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 04/08/11 09:04 BST Updated: 03/10/11 11:12 BST

The world's largest stop-motion film has been recorded using nothing more than the camera on a Nokia smartphone.

The video, "Gulp", was shot on a beach in South Wales using three Nokia N8 phones, each equipped with a 12 megapixel camera suspended on cranes to shoot from above.

Everything in the video, which tells the story of an unlucky fisherman and his trip to the bottom of the ocean, is life-sized, including the boat and the fisherman himself.

Some of the shots were shot on a canvas of more than 11,000 square feet.

Produced by Sumo Science, the making-of video (which you can watch below) is almost as interesting as the animation.

Once again, sloppy editorial work at Huffington Post leads to confusion. This is not the world's largest stop-motion film, it is the world's largest stop-motion film SET.

what is special about this? to me it looks like an animated cartoon!
i am not a hi-tech guy. what is a "stop motion" film?
what is the advantage over ordinary video films?
didn't this guy drown if he was underwater? is this fact or fiction?

can someone explain what is so wonderful about this little ditty.
thanks!

You take this stuff seriously? Really?

Stop motion is like 'Wallace and Gromit' where objects (usually miniature) are used instead of drawings to produce the animation. I'm not impressed either.... The makers were going for the 'gee-whiz' factor.

Stop motion is a series of still photos in which the subjects (drawings, figures, objects, etc). are moved or manipulated between each shot. The photos are strung together to make the movie. Often you can create a sense that the subject is floating or gliding along. The group OK Go uses it in their music videos. The fact that this one was made using phone cameras and that everything in it is life sized (phones suspended over the scenes and moved on cranes) is pretty wonderful to me--I loved the "making of" as much as the actual video--it's just whimsical and fun.

Very cool. I watched it twice. It is like 'Dot' smallest film captured on mobile.

Make sure to watch the video first, then the making of it. Fantastic!
