Polls Make Bad Reading For Prime Minister and London's Mayor

Cameron

A ComRes poll for The Independent reveals that 71 per cent of the public now oppose David Cameron’s plan to cut police number in the wake of the UK riots.

The research also suggests that London Mayor Boris Johnson and David Cameron have both suffered politically from the unrest, with 54 per cent of those polled saying that the prime minister failed to provide leadership early enough in the crisis.

Half of those polled said that they had less confidence that London would be able to host a safe Olympics next year.

Another poll, commissioned by Guardian/ICM, makes equally bleak ready for No.10, revealing that less than a third of the electorate believes the prime minister has done a good job during the riots.

The police fare markedly better, with 45 per cent of respondents saying that that the acting commissioner of the Metropolitan police, Tim Godwin, had done a good job.

When the media, police and politicians are found to be in bed together nothing good can come of it. Can you trust the media? Can you trust the politicians? Can you trust the police?

This hacking scandal has made the public less sure of who is fair, righteous and ethical?

Allegations of illegal behavior, payoffs, blackmail, immoral and unethical behavior leave the public wondering who can be trusted to look out for the average person.

Really concerned Rebekah Brook's one year plan is to cause an emergency state underwhich a fasci party can take the whole enchilada Croix de Feu style. BTW, Beck, our ugly little baby thing that won't die, besides calling the youth murdered by a political opponent "Hitler Youth," has said if Obama LOOSES, we will still confront a race riot. FOX, Ailes, Murdoch...they love this stuff and likely contribute to it. But that's another heated debate that leads nowhere other than allowing them to claim victim status while homes burn, people die and the truth is slaughtered for profit..

Slow to act but quick to seek political advantage by thinking the people are more disgusted with the police than with Cameron. How delightful, the big mouth gets to eat some crow.

I can't understand why Camron wants to hire Bratton, but continue to ignore his advise. He'd advise more police and a more diversified force. Cameron says less cops is the ticket. So, is he hiring Bratton because he was hired as Kroll's CEO to clean up their damaged reputation? Kroll hacked phones of a client's takeover target they were "analyzing." Is Bratton the quintessential Clean Up Man?

Bratton isn't a supercop; he's the CEO of a high tech spook firm that does 'data mining,' surveillance, you name it.  Cameron wants information, and it won't be cheap.  I posted details on the police condemn Bratton's appointment thread.

Of course they were slow. It didn't affect their friends or their friends constituencies. Was there any mass rioting in Kensington & Chelsea? When big corporations such as SONY lost property, oh yes they had to comeback then.

Yes, of course they were slow -- as former members of the Bullingdon club, Dave and Boris were at a loss as to why anyone might take umbrage at a bunch of spirited young people trashing stuff just for fun... until they realised that these kids hadn't left a generous tip -- which they felt was a tad impolite.

Camoron has stated that some sections of British Society are sick..........Well yes they are sick, sick of cuts in services, sick of high prices, sick of companies announcing record profits and then increasing their prices yet again, sick of massive bonus's, sick of MP's making inflated fraudulent expenses claims, sick of high unemployment, sick of being involved in wars overseas, in short sick of him...........

These people are slotted into positions of power, if you think we have democracy in this country your obviously suffering delusions, all parties are the same, you can only vote in the back benchers, the Eton brigade are earmarked for the top posts from the outset and this is why we receive similar disservice across the political spectrum, till we impose an across the board ban on leadership selection in all parties we'll suffer the same garbage we've been forced to endure for the last 50 years, why is it our political leaders all land "safe" seats on their way to the top, irrespective of party, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work that one out does it.

If we get an elected second house perhaps its time for an elected leader of government. The Queen could remain as head of state and it would seem to be a reasonable negative feedback (stabalising) system.

I am surprised at the level of support for the police, which is good to see I suppose. I think the Prime Ministers rating and the Mayors rating are interesting in different ways. The prime Minister is not up for re-election until 2015 in all probability, so I doubt the riots will be in peoples minds when they cast their votes. It may damage his image long term though and people might start to perceive him as a weak leader.

The effect on Johnson is far more interesting, I wonder if it will damage his chances next year of holding on to the mayoralty? Until now, he hasnt done anything spectacularly badly, the administration of London was in a good shape when he took over and he has continued what was already happening, but not added anything. I have felt that where he would trip up would be when something unexpected happend, and he isnt prepared to cope with it and dosent know what to do. I think this has happened now, but I dont know if the damage will last to next may.

"Not added anything". very true - a comment on any performance card would be "tries very hard to achieve mediocre results".
I would have thought that the riots over the weekend would have caused a great sourge of nostalger, with fond memories of plant pots flying through restuarant windows while dressed in the best that dady's millions can buy.

I dont thing he tries hard- he is still on staff with his paper for a quarter of a million and he delgates everything to his deputies. He only turns up for the photo opportunities. Look at the cleanup- he turned up for five minutes for the press with his broom and then left.
