Hubble Telescope: Latest Images

NASA's Hubble telescope has been sending us detailed images from space for 21 years. Here are the latest images. It's not exactly a point and shoot camera up there, so these are compiled from 2011 and 2010. Did you ever wonder why they can be so colourful? Hubble "shoots" in black and white, then color is added to highlight the features of the object being observed. The team call it "equal parts art and science."

Necklace Nebula
1 of 11
The Necklace Nebula, a recently-discovered planetary nebula, is 12 trillion miles across, dotted with dense, bright knots of gas that resemble diamonds. 15,000 light-years away, it is in the constellation Sagitta (the Arrow). The green glow is oxygen. Composite image, July 2, 2011, shot with Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3.
