The wife of an MP caught on CCTV sneaking into the home of his mistress in order to steal her kitten has appeared in Birmingham Crown Court.

Christine Hemming, wife of Yardley Lib Dem MP John Hemming, denies the charges of burgling the Birmingham home of Emily Cox.

Prosecutor Jason Pegg told the court that CCTV camera's at Cox's home had captured what had happened.

"This case is all about the defendant going to Emily Cox's home one evening in September of last year before entering that home and stealing a kitten known as Beauty," he said.

"She then left the house through the same door which she had entered but, when she left the house, under her left arm was Beauty the kitten."

Beauty has not been seen since her alleged abduction.

The court heard that Hemming, his wife and Cox, were engaged in a "love triangle" of which all three members were aware.

Cox worked as a parliamentary researcher Hemming and had a child with the MP in 2006.

In October John Hemming posted on his blog offering a reward for her return. "Kitten Missing." he wrote. "If anyone has seen this kitten please contact me at the House of Commons. There is a reward for its return".

Hemming hit the headlines recently when he used the protection of parliamentary privilege to break a series of super-injunctions, including one that prevented journalists reporting allegations that footballer Ryan Giggs had been having an affair.

In October 2005, as news of his affair with Cox broke, the MP admitted to voting for himself in the News of the World's "Love Rat" competition. He described his competitors for the prize as "various drab people from across the country".

Sad! Divorce, use it! I hope the kitten did not suffer, although, I doubt it.

I think that she had better say what she did with that kitten (she was caught on camera taking it, there's no doubt here) or I am going to feel safe in assuming that the vile sow killed it.

While it is possible that she took it to an animal charity, she doesn't seem the sort to be motivated by kindness, and I suspect that the police investigating the case have already asked around (yes, it was a kitten, it was also evidence).

Frankly, if someone callously and deliberately hurt my cat...I would want vengeance. Accidents happen, I understand that, but an intentional act would tempt me to seek retribution.

Sleep well, Beauty, wherever you are.

I'd bet that kitten is no longer alive, and that wifey told Hemming what she did.  When you have couple issues and the wife steals the mistress' little kitten, it's not to have a pet or a meal...it's to hurt hubby, mistress, mistress' child or all 3.  To do that, she'd have to tell Hemming what she'd done. This is animal abuse, which is a crime of power; and frequently those who commit it 'accelerate' to child abuse.   I hope Hemming's keeping a good eye on his children with wifey.

Mr. Hemming, divorce is a whole lot cheaper and in this case life-saving; imagine if wife had gotten hold of your mistress' child instead.  Tell the truth; if only to protect your children.

I thought highly of Hemming for busting SuperInjunctions in Parliament; no one else had the guts!  But his overwhelming desire to retain the illusion of 'family man' and 'father of three' shows me he's willing to hide things to get what he wants.  If he'd gotten a divorce at the beginning, and either lived with or married his "personal assistant" and acknowledged that child, I'd have far more respect for and trust in him.  Moreover, having your mistress on your payroll never screams 'respect for the voters.'  UK citizens aren't living in the dark ages, they understand that things happen and marriages break up and mistresses have children.
