The Pill That Prevents You Getting Drunk – Would You Try It?

Pills To Stop You Getting Drunk

First Posted: 29/09/11 13:05 BST Updated: 29/09/11 13:05 BST

Scientists are developing a ‘stay sober’ pill that could stop you from getting drunk, no matter how much alcohol you drink, a new report has revealed.

American and Australian scientists have carried out research focused on a pill that limits the effects alcohol has on the brain and the glial cells.

The experiment, conducted on mice, showed they didn’t get drunk, or even tipsy, despite consuming large amounts of alcohol.

The unnamed pill is being designed so that it shuts down brain immune responses. The experiment found that the animals who took the pill not only stayed sober, but their reflexes were far better than those who let their immune cells work normally.

“When a mouse gets drunk, it is quite similar to a human that’s drunk.  It can’t work its motor co-ordination properly. If you stop these immune cells from working, the animals didn’t get drunk.” Says researcher Mark Hutchinson, from the University of Adelaide.

According to the report, published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, researchers also found that the pill could help fight infections such as meningitis.

Do you think a ‘sober pill’ would take out the fun of drinking alcohol or would you be happy to say goodbye to those 'what did I do last night' moments?

Unless you have a particular predilection for the specific taste of alcohol, I'm not seeing that this drug would have many practical applications other than to treat addiction. So no, I wouldn't try it... :/

I don't see much point in the pill, unless they can turn it into something to treat alcoholics. If you don't want to get drunk, why drink? I have to laugh at anyone who tries to tell me they drink for the taste (except for maybe some wines and a few drinks that do taste nice).

The only people who might use this pill in my opinion, would be professionals who are at a function and want to stay sober but still appear to be drinking, or those that really enjoy the taste of fine wines or single malts but want to be able to drive home. But the majority of people drink to get some sort of effect, from being a bit relaxed and tipsy to full on hammered where they don't care what they say or do in order to get laid or to not feel so miserable about their lives. These are the people who are definitely not going to take this pill. Now if it were a "sober up" pill, or a "not quite so hammered, as I always have one too many" pill, not to mention a "sober up and have no hangover" pill, that would be a different story ;-)

Well the NHS had better get ready for yet more liver disease, and people will die even younger, this pill in my view is not a good idea. Antibuse is a much better alternative.

Then where will all the fun be to the people who get a nice buzz? Some people know how to drink, and stop at two like me. So your telling me the buzz is over!!!!! NAAAA keep your pill! not everybody is an alcoholic! I like my buzz it makes me want to dance, dance, dance! and romance, mance, mance! Does everybody always have to be straight! That pill is good if your an alcoholic, but if your not and you enjoy the moonlight, then why stop it? I am telling you, when you start taking all the fun out of life, and all you do is work and pay bills. It will eventually make you old and grey, dull!

You do realize they're not going to try to force you to take it, right?

People use alcohol as a drug. No one wants to admit that but its the truth.

I freely admit it. Not just that people use it as a drug-- it IS a drug. It has no other use.

This is fantastic news. Not only do we have pills for every little complaint anyone could possibly ever have, but we have pills so that that people can blissfully drink themselves into alcohol poison and not even notice. This is GREAT. In my opinion.....if this kills off an entire generation of drunks...that wouldn't be such a bad thing, really.

Uhh, what about the kidneys, will the kidneys feel the "affects" of drinking all the alcohol one wants.
07:28 PM on 09/29/2011
KIDNEYS THESE PEOPLE WANT TO FINISH OFF THE DRUNKS!
01:05 PM on 09/29/2011
It sounds potentially dangerous. Couldn’t you still die of alcohol poisoning?
