Charlie Hebdo Offices Firebombed After It Joked About The Prophet Muhammad (Pictures)

The Paris office of the satirical French Magazine Charlie Hebdo has been firebombed and its website has been hacked. It follows the announcement that the magazine would be 'guest edited' by the Prophet Muhammad.

It has been reported that the office was gutted by fire at around 1:00am Paris time, but there were no injuries.

Patrick Pelloux, a witness to the attack, told the AFP news agency that a molotov cocktail was thrown through the window.

"Everything was destroyed," he said.

According to the Associated Press the director of the magazine said “the material damages are large”.

On Tuesday the magazine said that the Prophet Muhammad would be editing the magazine in "honour" of Islam's role in this year's uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and other Islamic countries.

"In order fittingly to celebrate the Islamist Ennahda's win in Tunisia and the NTC (National Transitional Council) president's promise that sharia would be the main source of law in Libya, Charlie Hebdo asked Muhammad to be guest editor," the editorial team said in a statement.

On Wednesday morning the magazine's website had also apparently been hacked by an Islamist group.

There have been several cases in Europe of cartoonists, journalists and publishers being threatened or attacked after depicting cartoons and pictures of the religious figure.

Charlie Hebdo was taken to court in 2007 by two Muslim groups for reprinting those cartoons, but the suit was thrown out.

Another one of many reasons to loathe religion.

I think this is unacceptable. I hope the police catch who did this and charge them with attempted murder.
Where is your sense of humour lads? If Muhammed is still alive then do you think this is going to bother him? It's actually pathetic.

The use of the term "Islamist" in this report is politically significant. Huffington Post UK is agreeing with many critics of Islam that there are two deeply opposed elements in Islam today, Islamist and non Islamist.

The most widely used definition of Islamism focuses on the role of Sharia law wherever Muslims live.

Islamists believe that the classic jurisprudence of Sharia law is the definitive interpretation of the Koran and therefore should be a major--if not exclusive--source of civil law wherever Muslims live and that no manmade law should be allowed to contradict the law of Allah.

In the Charlie Hebdo case, disrespect of Mohammed is punishable by Sharia law:

"o11.0 NON-MUSLIM SUBJECTS OF THE ISLAMIC STATE (AHL AL-DHIMMA)
[…]
o11.5 Such non-Muslim subjects are obliged to comply with Islamic rules that pertain to the safety and indemnity of life, reputation, and property. In addition, they:

[...]

(5) Or mentions something impermissible about Allah, the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), or Islam.

o11.11 When a subject’s agreement with the state has been violated, the caliph chooses between the four alternatives mentioned above in connection with prisoners of war (o9.14)."

It’s telling that French Islamists are already treating French non Muslims as if they are subjects of an Islamic state.

There is nothing wrong with religion per se just some of the people in it who are not true to their particular religious norms.

or the wars that get started from them. :-)

I disagree. Throughout history religion has shown itself to be pure evil. Religion has been the cause of many wars, and during peaceful times religion continuously tries to dictate to, and manipulate and control, the people. It is therefore anti-democratic, anti-freedom, and always trying to ram its idea of justice down people's throats. For me, that is the definition of evil.

I think you may be confusing religion with spirituality, which is a genuine attempt to understand the universe. However religious fanatics always have, and always will, try to hijack spirituality in order to control the world.

Why is HP burrying this story? It's near the bottom of the UK site and isn't on the US or Canada versions at all. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though. Liberals defend Islam the way Conservatives defend Christianity... blindly. You can tell even by the attempts at criticism below. When something horrible is done by someone in the name of Islam, all religions need to be criticized together. While if someone does something horrible in the name of Christianity it is perfectly ok to go after Christianity singularly. Why is that?

FYI: Patrick Pelloux is not just "a witness to the attack", he is the head of France's emergency hospital physicians association (AMUHF) and a regular contributor to Charlie Hebdo where he writes a column on healthcare-related topics.

As a Charlie Hebdo reader, I am infuriated by what happened, but I am quite certain that they will recover fast. This issue - that maybe the terrorists thought they would keep from being published? - will be one of the highest-selling Charlie Hebdo will ever have. Libération has offered Charb, the editor-in-chief, to use their offices until they are able to relocate, and Delanoë, the mayor of Paris, has promised to help.

Allez Charlie, courage, tu en as vu d'autres...

If magazine do these type of features they must expect something like this to happen, I could have almost predicted it yesterday.

You'd expect something like this to happen in the third world, not Paris. This should be investigated and if the people who did it are found by the police, they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. That's justice in the West. I don't what to live under Sharia law. If you want to live under Sharia law, go to a country that operates that way. I'll stay in the 21st century, thank you.

I totally agree with what you say, but if you were a religious person of what ever faith, would you like your prophet/leader to be treated in the way this magazine did, I to hope the culprits will be caught and brought to trial.

Muslems have no idea about tolerance. They have been un reasonable for thousand of years. Maybe better to send Tom Cruise and introduce Scientology to them. Tom said it changed his life why mot the Muslems?
