Several people have reportedly been killed in huge crash on the M5 motorway near junction 25 close to Taunton in Somerset.

Sky is reporting that “20 light vehicles and six articulated lorries were involved in the crash”, which happened at around 8.30pm.

The motorway has been shut in both directions between junctions 23 to 26.

According to a police spokesman: “There are reports of between 25 and 30 injuries, 10 are believed to be life changing and it is believed that people have lost their lives.”

According to Sky, Somerset and Avon Police have confirmed "several fatalities".

Four of the vehicles are reported to be on fire, including a lorry. People have had to be cut out of some of the vehicles.

The cause of the accident is unknown, though conditions were reportedly bad with fog and flooding.

The roads were busy due to the nearby Bridgewater festival.

Chief Inspector Paul Mogg said: "All emergency services are on the scene doing as much as they can to continue the rescue operation and to treat those who are injured.

"There are large tailbacks at present and we would urge all to avoid the area for the next 24 hours at least."

The current government is considering raising the speed limit to 80mph. That is just a popularity measure in the wake of the Labour government's fetish with speed cameras and persecuting motorists while real criminals got off scot free. Raising the speed limit to 80 will mean that the 'unoffical limit' goes up to 90 and motorway pile-ups will become more common causing not only more carnage but delays to those caught up in them. The speed limit should stay at 70mph. Speed limits should be enforced while at the same time the police should operate a zero tolerance approach to all crime. Given the impression that drivers are being unfairly victimised by the police, the police will lose public support.

Poor bar-stewards. There were reports that some of them burned to death before the emergency services got to them. My thoughts are with the family and friends.
