Surge In 'Utterly Shameless' Theft Of War Memorials For Scrap Metal

War Memorial Thefts

First Posted: 12/11/11 10:40 GMT Updated: 12/11/11 10:40 GMT   PA

The surge in "shameless" thefts of war memorials is being fuelled by lax scrap metal regulation, town hall chiefs have warned.

Outdated laws mean "unscrupulous" dealers are able to buy up valuable plaques commemorating Britain's war dead, as well as metal from churches and railways, unchecked.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has called for councils to be given tough new powers to stop the "soaring" trade.

It wants a ban on cash payments so sellers can be traced, as well as the installation of CCTV with automatic number plate recognition in scrapyards.

Bosses should also be forced to keep a detailed log of people from whom they buy metal and renew their licences every year.

Mehboob Khan, chairman of the LGA's safer and stronger communities board, said: "It is utterly shameless and beyond contempt that anyone would desecrate the memory of those who have given their lives for their country in this way.

"The value of these metal plaques far surpasses any price these heartless thieves will get for the metal. Often they are the only remaining source of information on people from an area who have paid the ultimate price while serving their country.

"A lot of these stolen memorials will end up at scrap metal yards. Because of the lax regulation of the scrap metal industry, thieves can make a quick buck from unscrupulous dealers without any worries that it could be traced back to them.

"If we are to clamp down on thieves causing chaos and heartbreak by plundering metal for a quick profit, we need to give councils power to ensure the industry is properly run."

Police have issued an appeal for a missing war memorial plaque, taken from Lewisham High Street in south-east London last month, that contained the names of fallen servicemen from the First World War.

I don`t think these proposals will do much good, the thieves are simply going to melt the stuff down to make it unrecognisable or ship it abroad to the EU where they would sell their own children if they could make money out of it. Everything is at risk now we have free transit of eastern europeans. I have witnessed them stealing fish with nets from rivers and even day ticket fishing lakes simply because they eat anything they can. Its a bad day when everything we hold as normal and sacred is torn from us and there is nothing we can do to stop it.

This is a very serious racist comment which should be removed immediately. You have absolutely no evidence that any of the thefts being discussed are the work of East Europeans or any other race or culture. You should go to prison for inciting such hatred towards fellow Europeans.

In May 2010 Tohseef Shah spray painted "Islam will dominate the world - Osama is coming" across a British War memorial. He was ordered to pay a £50 fine and walked free. In November 2010 Emdadur Choudhury burned a poppy during the 2 minutes silence at the War memorial in London. He was ordered to pay a £50 fine and walked free from court.

Today two men were convicted of spray painting a poppy on the window outside a mosque in Britain. Both men were convicted and received a 12 month prison sentence. How long do people need before the penny drops?

All down to the whimpy MP's that are too afraid to be called all kinds by Muslims living in the UK. They should take a look at Geert Wilders in The Netherlands, he doesn't take any of their crap.

This sort of theft will only be braught under controle when the courts start to give out punishment that matches the disgust that the avarage man in the street thinks about these crimes. A start would be repayment in full for all damage caused, and a punitive fine for both the person steeling the metal and the scrap yard owner who buys it. This should have happened years ago but our MPs dont have the bottle to change the laws, only when they have the lead taken from their roof will they act.

How many scrap yards are there in the UK? Who is going to pay for the installation and running of the CCTV?? How much for a number plate recognition system? and who pays for that??? There is an obvious response to the thefts, but sadly your weak government officials will not pay for it. Get used to the thefts, or velcro the plaques to the memorial and allow the public to hide nearby and smash the thieves heads with spades if they remove them.

1985, as a Housing Manager I walked the estate and found men hammering copper water cylinders, What's going on?
They said that they had nicked the copper cylinders and pipe from a vacant property, .
I walked on, saw one of our radio vans A message and the police turned up, I was following the thieves and indicated to the police the offenders, they caught two of them, I got another.
One was missing, as we searched a child asked if we were playing hide and seek, if so the man was hiding in the bushes, I got him.
That afternoon I walked the estate with pockets of sweets for the children.
In court the thieves got a small fine and a telling off!.
The actions of these people cost the Local Authority £100ks, they got less tha £100 per house.
The damage was caused by not turning off the water and it flooded the empty houses, some used burning to take off the tubing, it led to some houses being burnt down, a risk to people living nearby and of course we had to rebuild.
Thge fines in court were pathetic, no real disincentive to the thieves and of course the scrap metal dealers claimed no involvement.
It would be nice for criminals to pay the costs of their crimes, no slapped hands, pay the cost of your crime and pay all court costs as well as the costs of any police investigation.

Hey - in Britain today there are is new and recently arrived stratum of society that not only does not care about our traditions, religion, war dead and heritage - but who actively HATE us with homicidal contempt. The first chance that they feel they are strong enough in numbers - they will be looking to kill us all and take over. Why shouldn't they in the logic of where they hail from? This follows the CRIMINAL and traitorous actions of certain 'British' and international politicians - whose objective was to subvert Britain 'from the top'.

Guess what - it has worked! Enjoy the diversity - and celebrate the new culture.

This has been happening in the US as well. Most of the perpetrators are meth addicts who steal whatever they can get their hands on.

Ten years minimum for taking it, ten years minimum for receiving it ... no judges discretion, no extenuating circumstances. That should sort the problem out reasonably quickly.

Perhaps if the governments hadn't been so thoroughly bought and paid for over the last few decades and funneling money towards their friends in the 1%'ers of our nations while simultaneously burying the middle class and poor, then perhaps they wouldn't resort to stealing memorials of sacrifices to mans greed so he can feed his family or pay the bills. Get used to it.

This low life trashing at the graves of those who served happens in the US as well. Every piece of nonferrous metal placed in honor at the graves of my ancestors here has been removed. I blame the scrap dealers. If they won't pay for it, there would not be as big a market for it.

EASILY SORTED - WHEN CAUGHT, SEND THEM TO AFGHANISTAN FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES. WHEN THEY RETURN, SEND THEM TO PRISON FOR 10 YEARS WITH NO CHANCE OF BEING RELEASED EARLY.
