London Olympics 2012: Impressive Stadiums Unveiled As Security Costs Spiral (Pictures)

Protecting the Olympic venues is costing taxpayers more than a quarter of a million pounds a day, as the price to the secure the 2012 London Olympic arenas continues to rise.

Many of the buildings that were under construction are now finished, meaning that security costs are now treble what they were in 2010.

Five of the arenas, including the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Velodrome, Handball and Basketball Arenas have already been finished. There is less than 250 days to go before the games begin.

The Olympic Stadium is reported to have cost £486m to build, while the Aquatics Centre came with a price tage of £269m.

However wire fencing, G4S security guards and screening of staff is purported to have cost £7.5m in September alone.

Aerial pictures of the stadiums, built in East London, Stratford, offer an impressive view to how the village may look on completion.

There are worries that costs may spiral., especially as securing the site of such an international event is relatively unknown.

Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the body in charge of developing and building the stadiums, said:

"Security for the Games is of paramount importance and has formed a vital part of the design and building process in delivering the London 2012 venues and infrastructure.

"Recent spend also includes capital works programmed to be carried out at this stage of the project following completion of the main venues on the Olympic Park, such as the installation of CCTV and security control rooms.

"These costs have already been accounted for within the ODA's budget. The ODA remains firmly on track and within budget, having identified more than £800m of savings to date."

As many servicemen and women have been made redundant there is work for them here running the security operation for the Olympics. They are probably experienced in roadblocks, searches etc from Iraq and Afghanistan, would do a better job than some private outfit like securicor.
Then they could be employed by the Border agency to keep illegal immigrants out, armed of course!

How come clicking on the news item "Search widens for missing Kate Prout" gets you this news item and not the one you clicked on? Huffington Post - get your site sorted out! It's almost as bad as the old AOL one it replaced. And by the way..... this is the second time I have posted this comment: the regulators appear to have removed it from "pending" without allowing it to be posted. If you are trying to drive me from AOL to another supplier, you are going the right way about it!

Why do the commercial sponsors not pay for the whole costs?
The fast food firms and drink providers will make a small fortune as people are not allowed to bring their own food and drink onsite, let them pay all the costs.
Why should my taxes pay for this event, I wil not be attending?
Oh! and could all the MPs, civil servants and the rest of the crony crew pay their own way?

The Daily Mail works it out at £250,000 a DAY!!!!

So thats 250 people on split shifts each on £1000 per day even over 10 sites means 25 people covering each site............thats a great job, where can i sign on?? Oh, but i assume we are saying a multi national has the contract and is charging the state £250,000 a day, paying Eastern Europeans on minimum wage who are doing 12 hours on 12 hours off 6 days a week and the "Management" team gets £50k a week maybe?

we have something similar here in AUS where we built the Homebush complex for the 2000 olympics, it now functions as an oversized convention center and probably only gets 30 busy days a year with some sports, concerts and the odd business trade convention

on the plus side its easy to get parking ~

Remember Athens 2000???
Security costs at that time 1,2 billion USD.
Some guys made big profits, and than came the decline of the whole country.
All that looks familiar
