Global Warming Threatens Inuit Ancient Traditions In Greenland

Greenland

Traditional ways of life in polar regions may disappear within 25 years, according to an academic who spent a year living in one of the world's most remote regions.

During his 12-month stay in Greenland with the Inugguit tribe, a branch of the Inuit people, Stephen Leonard witnessed at first-hand the decline of one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in the Polar North.

The Cambridge University anthropological linguist said the dual threats of global warming and consumerism have already begun to dilute the language and culture of the 770-strong tribe.

Dr Leonard said: "The Inugguit way of life centres upon the sea ice, which is rapidly disappearing. Traditionally they would be able to hunt on the ice from September to July but, when I was there, the ice did not appear until December.

"The movements of the sea mammals which they traditionally rely upon for their livelihoods have become less predictable. Some are replacing hunting with fishing, but this has never been part of their culture.

"Some of the younger people are extremely angry that their way of life is being threatened by a problem they did not cause. The elders accept it as part of a natural cycle and do not accept it is a consequence of man-made global warming. It is my view that within 25 years this way of life could cease to exist completely."

The Inugguit speak a unique language based on sighs and groans in which words can be up to 50 letters long. They have lived as hunter-gatherers in Greenland's remote Thule region for centuries, hunting seals and narwhals with harpoons.

Dr Leonard's aim was to study and record as much as he could of their oral culture - stories, myths, songs and folklore which have only ever existed in Inuktun.

His fear is that if the Inugguit leave their homeland in search of better employment prospects in south-west Greenland, both the language and the cultural heritage will, within a few generations, disappear.

I have no sympathy for these people. They have already changed their `ancient` ways by living with all modern comforts. Hunting these animals is ridiculous they do not depend on them for anything anymore to survive. In fact climate change will finish them off anyway, Inuit and wildlife. As for you deniers, quite rampant on this site, I hope you don`t have kids because future generations are going to blame your generation for acting like a bunch of ostriches.

Alaska is experiencing warmer than normal temps while the continental US is experiencing a downward trend in wintertime temps.

So how is this warming trend 'global'?

Sounds 'regional' to me.

Or maybe, just maybe what the Alaskans are experiencing is something like the 'medieval warming period' that you charlatans tried to wipe off the record books.

Of course you have data to back up such "global" statements about Alaska and the rest of the US. . . .

"The elders accept it as part of a natural cycle and do not accept it is a consequence of man-made global warming." That's why we respect our elders!

"Ancient" tribe of 1,000 years.... on an Earth of 4.6 billion years.... The equivalence of about 9 minutes of our lives.

I was sick for a week and a half (and now I feel great)...I have grown (and contracted) over the years... I have got sunburns that have repaired themselves.... I have been in smoky bars (and dorm rooms) and had coughing fits as a result.... I smoked myself for over a decade, inflicting my lungs to damage. However, in the ten years since I last smoked, my lungs have repaired themselves.

We can look at any snapshot in time - but unless we acknowledge the outside forces along with the overall picture, any statements can not be considered definitive.

Paul,

I thought you would find it interesting that you are responding to someone who believes ACORN still exists and is behind the Occupy movement.

Perhaps people should listen to the elders more. After all, they know more about the weather conditions and the local wildlife in the far north than anyone else.

Sure why listen to science when your elder says it's not true anyway.

Would you also suggest having your elder diagnosis cancer treatment or computer repair?

Interesting article: "Climategate 2.0: New E-Mails Rock The Global Warming Debate"

"Three themes are emerging from the newly released emails: (1) prominent scientists central to the global warming debate are taking measures to conceal rather than disseminate underlying data and discussions; (2) these scientists view global warming as a political “cause” rather than a balanced scientific inquiry and (3) many of these scientists frankly admit to each other that much of the science is weak and dependent on deliberate manipulation of facts and data."

Not at all surprising. http://www.forbes.com/sites/jamestaylor/2011/11/23/climategate-2-0-new-e-mails-rock-the-global-warming-debate/

These are not new. But, just a pile of the emails stolen two years ago that they did not bother to release back then. The so called themes are from the previous release which has already been discredited.

Keep trying to reheat those old left-overs. There were over 220,000 e-mails stolen in 2009, with many dating back years. Two-thousand were released in 2009 (aka Climategate). Five-thousand were released now. Quite simply, the conclusions of multiple investigations spawned by Climategate still stand–and those conclusions exonerated the scientists and verified the science.

Nice try. Even some Republicans realize how lame this new release of stolen e-mails is: http://www.rep.org/opinions/press_releases/backgrounder11-11-23.html

Yes, it appears that even some impressionable Republicans have been drinking the kool-aid.

Your link does not add anything to the argument, its just a "nah nah nah, I can't hear you because I've got my hands over my ears" kind of posting.

The fact that a tax-payer sponsored entity is now considering deleting its emails, and continues to refuse to publish its original data, and continues to insist that its the unquestionable global authority on all things climate should raise a few red flags.

Their language is based on sighs and groans? Oh come on! I lived there too, for two years in the 1980s and visited annually for about 2 decades. I have 2 children that grew up there (in Qaanaaq). Their langauge is an Inuit (Eskimo) dialect related to West Greenland and to Canadian Inuktitut and the differences between the dialects are readiuly surmountable if one is sufficiently interested. Dr. Leonard is not the first to document the language and culture of the Inughuit (not Inugguit) - in fact they are the most studied and most well-documented and most written-about of any Inuit. But I suppose Dr. Leonard has to write about something to justify his grant funding. Too bad he writes such drivel.

"...the language and culture of the Inughuit (not Inugguit)..."

I was wondering about that. I was just on Wikipedia, and could not find "Inugguit" but the encyclopedia suggested "Inughuit". I did not click on the link because I was unsure whether the suggestion was correct, and looked up "Inuit" instead. Now, I can go back and click on the suggestion link with confidence.

All depends which bunch you're talking to, rather like if you call a native an Indian in South/central Alberta, you can get in trouble. Call a native a native in much of BC and he or she will say 'you're from Alberta, aren't you?'
