Housing Benefit: Bedroom Tax 'Disastrous', Says National Housing Federation

Housing Benefit Bedroom Tax Lord Best House Of Lor

Expert have urged peers to halt the government's proposed "bedroom tax" amid claims it will have "disastrous" consequences.

In a blog for the Huffington Post UK, the Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation (NHF) David Orr says nearly three-quarters of a million families deemed to have a spare bedroom could be £676 a year worse off under plans to dock their housing benefit.

"This bedroom tax will have disastrous implications for a huge number of people already struggling to make ends meet in this tough economic climate, including grandparents, disabled people and smaller families," he warns.

Instead of tackling state spending, the NHF claim that it will hit teenagers and foster parents.

"Under the government's restrictive new rules, same sex teenagers up to the age of 15 will be forced to share a bedroom.

"And foster parents will be affected even where their bedrooms are occupied by foster children, who for benefit purposes do not count as part of the household."

The NHF has called on peers to support an amendment by Lord Best blocking the tax.

But Welfare reform minister Lord Freud said the situation was not "fair or affordable"

"It’s not fair or affordable for people to continue to live in homes that are too large for their needs when, in England alone, there are around five million people on the social housing waiting list and over a quarter of a million tenants are living in overcrowded conditions.

"It’s only right that we bring fairness back to the system and make better use of the social housing stock."

Hillingdon council have 80 void properties which they cannot rent out to prospective tenants.

I have queried this with Hillingdon Homes and have been informed they have been having issues with their maintenance contractor since October 2012 and no maintenance on voids have been carried out since then.

100 Hillingdon families are living in B&Bs The council is not generating income from the voids.
People who want to downsize can't because of the situation with repairs, however, I am aware there are many people who would be happy to downsize if Hillingdon council released the voids; In the meantime tenants in properties to big for their needs will continue to be penalised because of the councils inability to get things right. As usual it will be the poor and the council tax payers who will foot the bill.

The Housing act,1985 says any bedroom 70 sq Ft or less is regarded as a "box room" therefore not a bedroom! and cannot be charged as one! This has now been tried and found to be correct ,,, so check your room sizes folks!

my god !! reading some posts and comments from people on different sites they are complaining they only get £110 a week on social or sick and will have to pay this bedroom tax ffs i work full time and by the time i pay my FULL rent and council tax i am left with £70 a week COME into the real world people get a job then you have the right to complain
09:46 on 13/05/2013
Have you got any jobs to offer? I'm sure that amongst the growing unemployed there are those who want to work and Can't because there is no work? There are those who are struggling to feed a family as the benefit they get is grossly not in touch with the real world as you put it, and yes £10 or £20 is a Crisis in these conditions, So unless you have experienced this end of the street then don't throw stones...

It's too little too late! Why is there suddenly a stink about this when letter's were sent out months ago! Why was this not noticed before now?? I live in a deprived area, have done for nearly 7yrs and am at breakpoint, ffs there was someone on our roof 3 days ago throwing slates at police,a roadblock and a 4hr seige!! We are innocent victims,we pay what we have to,we work, our kids are doing well in school despite where we live! Then they tell me we need to pay an extra £15 a week for a room that you cannot swing a cat in,put up with conditions that after this weekend looks like a war zone....The decision has already been made, why moan when you only gonna get screwed all the more anyway. When you try to do the very best for your family why oh why does it feel like you may as well not bother? I totally understand that some peeps on benefits need shaking up but please please and why oh why are they hurting the ones that are doing their best?

More to add to this. If Cameron and his cohorts are so concerned about the rising housing benefit bill, then I am sure he would love to help out? After all, as his mate George Osborne one said, 'We are all in this together'.

So, on that basis, I am sure, Georgie boy, and Cameron, would love to help out the homeless by providing rooms within their second homes PAID FOR BY THE STATE. And I would I be correct in saying that the Royal Family would love to help too? By providing rooms, of course, from homes that YOU AND I PAY FOR, such as Sandringham Castle, Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace. After all, we are 'ALL IN THIS TOGETHER' - right George? Hmm, thought not. Because you don't mean the Royals, do you Cameron? Do you Georgie boy?

You mean the poor people who have paid into the system but now find themselves without work, through circumstances beyond their control. You mean the low-life that you and your cohort reptilian friends look down your noses at.

This Government has now become so power-crazy, that they are now out of control, attacking the poor at every opportunity they get. People, I believe, truly that the time has come to force a General Election THROUGH A VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE!

They have become so power crazy that they have forgotten it is the people, with the ultimate power. AND IT IS THE PEOPLE WHO WILL ULTIMATELY, KICK THEM OUT!

The bedroom tax is nothing more than a direct attack on the poor. Because this rag-bag minority Government, who had no mandate to do what they are doing right now, know full well that there are NO ONE BEDROOM PROPERTIES AT All TO MOVE INTO So, therefore, it is forced homelessness. Never forget, people, that this Government, this shower of MPs WORK FOR YOU, not the other way round.

Yet they govern for the rich, and leave the rest of the country, the lower-classes' to shake with fear at their unworkable policies. They are very fond of attacking benefit cheats, very fond indeed. But what about attacking PARLIAMENTARY CHEATS, WHO HAVE ROBBED THE TAXPAYER CONTINUALLY, by purchasing things for their two and three homes? NOT ONE ARREST HAS BEEN MADE...I WONDER WHY? So it is more a case of DO AS WE SAY, AND NOT AS WE DO.

Those adverts that have been shown on television which say 'BENEFIT CHEATS, WE ARE WATCHING YOU'. Well, there should be another advert shown, saying PARLIAMENTARY CHEATS, WE, THE PEOPLE, ARE WATCHING YOU!'

And, let us not forget, that all those taxpayers who are supporting the bedroom tax and other benefit cuts are forgetting one crucial point. That all those claiming benefits [and I am not including those who have never worked here] are claiming ONLY WHAT IS THEY HAVE PUT INTO THE SYSTEM THROUGH THEIR STAMPS.

I listened to the Government Minister this morning talking about this subject.

He suggested that people work harder and earn overtime to pay for the bedroom tax.

I just wonder what planet the Government Minister inhabits?.

With employees already working all hours of the day and night as UNPAID overtime / Time Off In Lieu ( which you never get to take ) , which employers are going to be willing to swap to a system of PAID overtime and / or be willing to grant additional paid hours?

Doubtless some will, but - - -

It seems like we have just come out of a massive war. All these disabled people on incapacity benefits and the like. All these "carers", all getting paid. All these people who can type very well and reason very well but can't work for some reason. As soon as any british government introduces a benefit to help people an army appears made up of people who abuse it.

This tax has nothing to do with creating space! It however has EVERYTHING to do with saving money. The Government don't want us to move they want us to be good little paupers and stay put and swallow the tax. There is not enough one bedroom properties for everyone to move into FACT. In fact IF people on HB do move to the private sector to find their one bedroom properties the HB bill could be MORE that if they has stayed in their Two or Three bedroom Properties. This is an unprecedented attack on the most vulebrable section of this country and it stinks to high heaven! Join the Fight now facebook.com/#!/groups/antibedroomtax/

We live in a council oap’s bungalow, because my wife as got a disability, I am 56 my wife is 46. Because we have 2 bedrooms, we will be hit by the new bedroom tax, which we cannot afford to pay. We have asked the council about having a 1 bed roomed bungalow. They said we would have to register on the housing list, and bid for properties. We have done, but they have put us in the lowest band possible, meaning we will never get a move. We have done what we can to move to a smaller property. So why should we be penalized. We will not pay the bedroom tax, so this time next year we will probably have been evicted.

See below other silly taxes, which have been abolished

1) Wallpaper Tax UK (1712 - 1836) Abolished

2) Fireplace Tax UK (1662 – 1689) Abolished

3) Window Tax UK (1696-1851) Abolished

3) community tax or Poll Tax UK (1989–93) Abolished

NEW TAX

5) Bedroom Tax UK (2013 -

Will cause a lot of evictions.

WHAT NEXT

A backdoor tax because we only need one door.

PM Mr David Cameron should realize,
It was his rich friends who messed the economy up and still paying themselves large bonuses.
While the poor have to pay more.

ALL IN IT TOGETHER, I DON’T THINK SO.

I know how you are feeling im on esa work group and my wife is on esa support group i.e both disabled both on contribution based i.e. paid tax etc over many years with current changes to housing benefit and the new changes we will have to live on £110 a week below current government minimum and thats without any disabilities
By the way the government are putting esa benefit on contribution based and not income based to stop people claiming other income based benefits i.e. cold weather payments etc

I'm no great follower of Cameron - but I do think it a bit rich to be saying "It was his rich friends who messed the economy up".

I don't beleive they were handed over a useable economy. Wasn't it the previous lot (yours by the sound of it) who walked out and left a note at the Treasury saying "Sorry ther's no money left - we spent it all, whoops".

And to re-iterate something I'm talking about on another post ; The rich poor divide grew by something like 10% when they were last in power - do you want that again?

Do any of you also realise the effect this is going to have on seperated single Dads?? My son is a single dad with visitation rights to his son whom he has every weeken for three nihts 4 days! He was given a 2 bed flat so that his son has his own room, he has now been told that he will have to pay £15 week for the sons room as he does not have the child benefit paid to him! he has no choice but to move as he cannot afford to pay another £15out of his sick benefit! So the ex said if you do not have a room for your son your not seeing him!! This is going to be happening all over the country and we need to stand up to the government! They are saying we need to save money then WHY don't they all reduce there wages and stop claiming all the crap on expenses! THEY HAVE JUST GIVEN 5 MILLION TO ANOTHER COUNTRY TO HELP PAY FOR THAT COUTRIES WAR!! WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THE INJUSTICE IN OUR COUNTRY!

Let's get this right, you have joint residency for your grandson from Friday to Monday. Your son has visitation rights to his son every weekend for three nights and four days. Is this the same son / grandson and if so, how can he be in two places at once? Either he's staying in his father's spare room or he's staying with you, which is it?

I thought it was very clear! His son has his own 2 bed place and his grandson goes to stay with him, he will have to move to a one bed place and his ex says h can't go because he won't have a bedroom. Why are people so stupid and get married all the time and have babies without really knowing each other?

I have a two bed council bungalow due to my husband being ill, I am his carer 24/7 I have been told today that we will have to pay for our spare room £14.22 a week! If we had a carer that came and stayed in our small second bedroom 2 nights a week we would not have to pay! where is the fairness in that, it costs less for me to look after my husband than bring in outside help! Even if we slept in separate rooms for any reason as we are married we still have to pay this room tax! Our spare room is used for my grandson to sleep in and has been his room since he was born as I have joint residency for him he stays with me Friday to Monday and over half of all holidays, because the child benefit is not paid to me direct I still have to pay this Room Tax, out of our small benefit income we struggle to manage now without this added expense and I have just been told that I will have to pay Council Tax to!!

@ janercee
I suggest you contact the Citizens' Advice Bureau and have them review your benefits entitlement. If your husband is in receipt of certain disability benefits then you should not be paying council tax. He may be entitled to attendance allowance, in which case he should be eligible for home help too which would give you a break.
You do sound very stressed and I'm not surprised if you have to worry about a disabled son and husband, and caring for your grandson on top of it all. Add to that your financial problems and you will end up ill yourself from worrying. Try and get some advice, you shouldn't have to be coping with all that on your own.
11:04 on 17/02/2012
the answer to all of this c.r.a.p is if you have a 2 bedroom ,turn the spare bedroom into a dining room
remember the window tax ,they just bricked them up !
