RSPCA: Handbag Dogs Born To Suffer

Dog In Handbag

Owners of fashionable pedigree pooches are unaware their "handbag dogs" could be "born to suffer", the RSPCA has said.

Research by the animal charity revealed many people believe pedigree dogs and puppies are healthy, quality animals that come from good breeding stock.

However, the dogs, which are primarily bred for their looks, are vulnerable to unnecessary disease, disability, pain or behavioural problems.

RSPCA senior scientist Claire Calder said: "Everyone needs to be aware of the serious health and welfare problems affecting pedigree dogs and that dogs bred for looks are born to suffer.

"A cute-looking puppy or dog can be hard to resist, but the result of not looking beyond this can be thousands of pounds spent on vets' bills and a pet with long-lasting health and welfare problems. This is one of the biggest challenges facing dog welfare in the UK today."

A survey commissioned by the charity found dog buyers are not doing enough research before getting a new pet.

Pollsters asked 2,127 people what they associate with pure-breed or pedigree dogs. The top six responses were that they are expensive, well bred, from good breeding stock, quality, responsibly bred and healthy

Victoria Stilwell, presenter and dog trainer from the TV show It's Me Or The Dog, said: "I have nothing against dog showing and nothing against responsible breeders.

"But what I do have something against is breeding animals just for the way we want them to look, even though that animal is compromised both physically and, a lot of the time, mentally. So we have to change. Why are we destroying these animals just because we like the way they look?"

The RSPCA is launching a campaign, Bred For Looks, Born To Suffer, in order to raise awareness of the issue.

I've been blessed to share my life with a variety of dogs, both mutt and purebred. I haven't got one bad story to share with you (other than their eventual loss) because they were all treated well and responded lovingly in kind.

I'm partial to German Shepard dogs (mixed and pure) for their loyalty, intelligence and personality. I currently have dachshunds and adore them for their fierce little stubborn natures. None of my dogs have ever worn clothes or been carried around in a purse. I take them with me everywhere possible but they walk on their own, tethered safely by a leash to me. My dogs are registered (with the city), spade and micro-chipped. I spare no expense for their health and well being but would never insult them by treating them as humans or accessories. They are animals and I love them for that.

I grew up on a farm where people would often times abandon their unwanted animals. Those unwanted animals (dogs and cats) turned out to be the best pets in the world! As a kid I trained all my cats to follow my commands just like the dogs did. We never once owned a purebred (or if it was purebred we didn't know) but every single one of those dogs learned how to be a farm dog very quickly...even the wolf/husky mix that someone begged us to take. They were taken care of and loved and in return gave us companionship and helped on the farm. People underestimate the importance of dogs and cats and take for granted that they will always be around. Continuing to breed dogs simply because of their looks is an insult to dogs everywhere.

It's not just dogs. Many pedigree cats have been overbred to cruel and harmful extents. The Siamese used to be a slim, healthy, muscular cat with an appealing broad triangle-face. Now, it is appallingly fragile, with a skinny rat-like skull and often, a host of behavioural problems. Similarly, the Persian used to have a pretty face with a short but serviceable noses. However, the pedigree standard insisted that the nose should be reduced to a recessed button and the cheeks be as full as possible, resulting in a cat with a useless nose and breathing problems along with runny eyes. For me, moggies are the only pet.

Obey My Dog!

FOxxy, the dog on my profile pic was given up because she was slightly too big for a purse. She's cute as, but at 2.2 kilos too big to be a "well bred" chihuahua. That's cool though, she looks gorgeous on the end of the leash. She also rides well in a small shoulder bag very quietly, but she really loves going like that, and only when going in and out. SHe's a handbag sort of dog, but she doesn't suffer.

I recently read an article about the huge increase in the number of handbag dogs abandoned in Japan. With the recession biting and the fashion for toy dogs on the slide these moron owners just dump them, they are collected gassed and incinerated. Perfectly healthy dogs destroyed because they are no longer in style.

40-50 yrs ago these so-called 'designer breeds' were called mutts and couldn't be given away for free, today we have naive gullible consumers will shell out 1200-1500 $$$$ for one because some pop start or celebrity has one. these dogs come from horrendous puppymills where the parents suffer unimaginable neglect and cruetly with no medical care.

it's mind-boggling how today's consumers(especially in the internet age) are so easily duped and are less informed than my generation 50 yrs ago.

currently i have 1 pure bred cat who was born a type 1 diabetic. and 2 healthy mixes. i also have a pocket sized little chorkie that was born to a family that did not advertise her as a toy or teacup. she was also very modestly priced including shots and a health guarantee from a local vet. at 4 lbs at 6 months i think she's within normal standards for both breeds. so far the first and only pure bred i've ever owned is medically fragile. i'm lucky that i'm in a position to be able to pay for her supplies. test strips and needles add up quite quickly. not to mention a quality food to allow her to break down as much on her own as she can, and her insulin.

Many breeds have been designed for looks, not just the currrent accessory-dogs. Along with this comes health ailments like eye problems and hip problems.

Take a look at a picture of a Boston Terrier or Pug from 1900 versus what we see today. Mind boggling and disgusting. What we see as cute pug noses is actually a soft palate that causes them all sorts of problems for their entire lives.

Couldn't a lot of these animal welfare issues be solved with better regulation?
Perhaps if it became law for owners to have thier dog(s) registered with the proviso that their pets are vaccinated routinely, medically examined routinely and have the necessary insurances (medical/liability) in place plus a clause to ensure that financial security will be provided for their pets to be cared for when no longer required!

Would this be sufficient to make us think twice before buying a puppy?

Ah, but try to get owners to register their dogs. As a Dog Constable, I can tell you that it is hard enough to get many owners to pay the $10 for their "fixed" dog or $25 for their unaltered dog to get tags that, according to our by-laws, they HAVE to have. Even knowing they can be taken to court for neglecting to register their dog doesn't help...I have to keep an eye out constantly for dogs that might be untagged and even though I live in a very small community, each year I find several that I missed the year before. It would be great if we could get everyone to register their dogs, but in reality...a LOT easier said than done!

Stop breeding puppies

For more info read about puppy mills on www.hsus.org, www.bestfriends.org, www.prisonersofgreed.org, www.thepuppymillproject.org. This is such a huge issue we will never get out from under it. We keep breeding to just turn around and kill them. That is all we are doing now.

i have 4 staffies and i love them very much i only got staffies because where i worked had them and they was so nice. but i would never get a dog just because the pop and film stars have them. and put them in bag's its cruel.i no a few people that have paid upto 5 hundred pound for a cross breed just because it was small but now all she has is a big vet bill as its always ill poor little dog.

This is not news! Anyone who has a reasonable interest in dogs or owns a dog will already know all of this.

Those people are not the problem. it's the people that see these dogs the same way they see a ring, a fashion accessory, because such and such film- /pop start has one too. In short, dumb people that can't think for themselves.

I have 5 dogs three are rescue dogs I dog is my assistance dog and the other dog is one my daughter got to train as her assistance dog two weeks before she died I kept him as well. All of my dogs would be classed as mutts but guess what I never have anything but joy and happiness from them from the minute I get up to the minute I go to bed.
If you want something to carry in a handbag get a soft toy and allow dogs to be dogs running around their feet do work.
