Europe: MPs Will Consider Cost Of Being In Union

A plan by the UK Independence Party to force the Government to carry out a cost/benefit analysis of Britain's EU membership has been sent to the Commons.

Ukip peer Lord Pearson saw his European Union Membership (Economic Implications) Bill agreed by the House of Lords, meaning it will go to MPs to consider.

Before being picked up in the Commons, an MP will have to sponsor the Bill - but a Ukip spokesman said the party was "very confident" an MP could be found.

Following the third reading vote, Lord Pearson said: "For far too long the Government has simply maintained that the benefits of membership are so overwhelmingly obvious that such an analysis would be a waste of time and money.

"The people of Britain are no longer prepared to accept this. All great debates require knowledge, and there is no greater debate than the future governance of this country.

"It is in the interests of every single one of us that this ongoing debate is conducted from a position of knowledge rather than in a cloud of ignorance, obfuscation and dishonesty.

"My Bill provides for an independent panel, comprising of people from across the spectrum of opinion, to weigh up the evidence.

"We must know what the costs, and what the benefits, really are. This debate is long overdue."

Lord Pearson's Bill is unlikely to become law unless it wins Government support.

I would be curious just to see what the costs would be to this country with the bailing out of Greece,Ireland and Portugal and with Spain and France not looking to good as to the money paid to the EU as of now,how much of an increase would it be to the tax payers as this review if passed, would have to look to future increased payments.
Anyway who cares about the £20.8 million we burn everyday giving it to the EU and that is after the UK has had all of its subsidies and grants,so for starters we are £20.8 million per day in the red.

Don't get too excited, read what was actually said:

"Before being picked up in the Commons, an MP will have to sponsor the Bill"

Then, appreciate what that means - it will be a private members bill. Private members bills have little chance of proceeding unless the government allocates enough time. The vast majority of such bills go nowhere.

Then, in the unlikely event that the bill passes through the HoC, all those who oppose the EU will not accept the result when it shows that there is a benefit from EU membership.

So what are you worrying about, its quite obvious YOU benefit but the country as a whole, no.

As Alfred E. Neuman would say; "What? Me worry?"

Various polls have shown that the majority of voters want out of Europe, despite what the politicians say about the benefits of membership.

Cracking idea Grommit! (sorry- I mean Lord Pearson) I am convinced that a cost analysis will reveal that there have been NO benefits gained from membership of the EU. Furthermore a forecast of future costs will force a referendum!
