Tens of thousands of demonstrators have rallied in the Russian capital in another huge protest against election fraud, signalling a growing outrage with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's 12-year rule.

Protesters gathered near the Kremlin in a demonstration as big as that of two weeks ago in the biggest show of discontent with the country's rulers since the end of communism 20 years ago.

Among those taking to the streets were former Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, who called on Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to resign according to Russian Radio.

Recent protests throughout the country have damaged Putin's authority as he seeks to reclaim the presidency in the poll next March. Protesters are urging for a rerun of the parliamentary elections earlier this month and for punishment of officials accused of fraud. The Kremilin has responded by proposing politival reforms that would liberalise election rules.

Other rallies are taking place across Russia including the first big protest in the far eastern city of Vladivostock.

More than 40 busloads of riot police on the street in Moscow, Rusian media says security is tight with access to Sakharov Avenue, where the protesters were congregating, briefly closed.

At least 28,000 people have turned out in Moscow, Russian interior ministry spokesman Valery Gribakin told Russian news agencies while a police spokesman told AFP news agency that there was room for 50,000 on the avenue.

When i read some comments i see most of the time that peuple western people don't support or don't understand realy why we have all these problems about Russia. And is true that in Russia there is not realy much more démocratical issues than here or USA. Even in some point of view Russia can be seen more democratical country. When we talk about opposition in Russia we know that it recieve a very big support from the West (Pentagon, UK etc...) against Moscow. So there is realy two political side: pro-western and pro-russian. And It's good cos there is a real competitor, so Russia try to do the best he can to keep his people with him. But in UK or USA or France as called democracies there is no one helpt by another ideology or foreign country. Although there is two political opposition as well, they lead mostly the same ideas or policy and i am sure they belong prety much to the same boss, and anyway there is no one to compet with them and takeaway their power.

As the adage goes, "Power Corrupts - Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely." Do we blame Putin or human nature?

Look more to America than Russia. Bush wanted to ring Russia with missiles, Obama came to power, said he wouldn't do it. Now - trying to win votes? appealing to jingoistic USA? - he wants to go ahead with these bases. I know that I'd be very worried if someone wanted to encircle me with missile bases - and was not prepared to give me any guarantees of their intentions.

Russia is extremely worried - to the extent that President Medvedev made a formal statement - on TV from the Kremlin - to the Russian people on 23rd Nov 2011. Russia will build the same number of bases as the Americans - not more, but certainly not less. And Russia won't be giving guarantees to anyone!

The Cold War could be about to begin again! But look to the far West for the problems rather than the East.

Putin. There are other leaders (admittedly few) who have had the courage and honesty to give up -- or give back -- power to enable democracy to proceed. Charles de Gaulle in France and Figueres Ferrer in Costa Rica are two that come to mind. So the dark side of human nature can be overcome.

Putin may not be the best, however during his time as President, then Prime Minister, Russia has advanced significantly economically, and with standards of health care, education and employment prospects. (Both their Health Care & Education standards are far superior to that of Britain and many Euro countries).
Commit a crime in Russia and you WONT be slapped on the wrist and given an ASBO - commit the crime - you WILL do the time - - if only the UK was as tough!
I have been visiting Russia every year over the last 15 years (wife's Russian) and have seen many improvements in all aspects of life. So let's not make generalisations - they have Rent-a-mob in Russia just as in Britain.
