The Queen and members of the Royal Family attended a Christmas Day church service today as the Duke of Edinburgh recuperated in hospital following surgery.

The Duchess of Cambridge joined royals at the service at a church on the Queen's estate in Sandringham, Norfolk, for the first time as 90-year-old Prince Philip was being treated at Papworth Hospital near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, following treatment for a blocked coronary artery.

Police estimated 3,000 well-wishers had gathered outside St Mary Magdalene Church to see royals, including the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Harry, the Princess Royal, the Duke of York, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex, arrive.

England rugby player Mike Tindall and the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips, who married in the summer, also attended the service.

The royals traditionally gather at Sandringham for Christmas. Philip normally walks the few hundred yards from the main house to the church and is not thought to have missed a Christmas Day service before.

Well-wishers called out with questions about the Duke, but members of the family did not respond.

The Duchess of Cambridge is spending her first Christmas as part of the Royal Family following her marriage to Prince William, now the Duke of Cambridge, in April.

By 9.30am hundreds of people were waiting at the gates, with queues stretching back around 300 yards.

Veteran royal-watcher Mary Relph, 77, from Shouldham, near Sandringham, said the royals had been spending Christmas at Sandringham for the last two decades and queues had never been as long.

"I have never seen queues like this on Christmas Day before, I have never seen this amount of people here since Diana was alive," she said.

"People are obviously coming to see Kate Middleton."

She said she was sure the Duke of Edinburgh had never missed a Christmas at Sandringham before.

What bugs me about the Royal family is, there the true scroungers of the UK, everyone goes on about people on benefits being this when this lot get a vast fortune income paid by the same people (tax payer) to them every year, and next year there get to go on even more jolly holidays with it being the Queens 60th jubilee, why can't we have a President at least they work, many say this lot do, but its really laughable because thet wouldn't know hard days work if it bit them on them on the nose, a President (head of state) is not a hereditry title in which is also wrong so we wouldn't lumbered with the same lot forever more.

Just shows how stuck up they are and not in tune with their public "wellwishers called out questions about Phillip, but the family did not respond - how rude.

Headline: Kate Middleton and Royals - unfortunately this woman is no longer Kate Middleton, she is the Duchess of Cambridge and has infiltrated herself into our Royal Family.

Philip is like the angry misogynist racist uncle your mum tells you to stay away from at the family gatherings I'm sure they enjoyed the quiet time.

Isn't it time you showed a little courtesy and stopped referring to the young Countess as Kate Middleton and used her correct title.

Looks like hats are trending back in style.....I always liked hats, they make the ladies look more stylish and the guys look more classy when dressed proper.

You can go to church all you want, but God still knows that you were doing the dirty before marriage.

You wrote: "You can go to church all you want, but God still knows that you were doing the dirty before marriage."

Now substitute in place of God, 'me and sphinctered, otiose, judgmental souls, just like me' now look what you get...

You can go to church all you want, but me and sphinctered, otiose, judgmental souls, just like me still know that you were doing the dirty before marriage.

Now how pray tell do you think your opinions matter to the Cambridges? Please stop preying on persons you neither know nor who could give a damn about your unsolicited, small-minded opinions.

I think what he meant was they swore an oath to love honour and protect in their marriage vows but they didn't keep it so their oath was worthless
So any oath they make to their country must also be worthless

Hogwash... what firstamendment3 implied was that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were engaging in premarital sex which therefore made them sinners before a man-created god... It is their business and quite rightly they should have been making love all along; it is their lives and no one's business. At least, they did not get thrown together and then get married as per his parents. They knew each other, fell in love, clearly explored their sexuality, enjoyed and were better persons for having done so and good for them!

Whle they do enjoy a life of Royalty, it is not easy being under a microscope 24/7 and, no matter what they do, someone complians! History shows that Diana was miserable most of the time except with her children. Hope she fares better. She is a Class Lady.

It will all come out in the wash in 150 years time.
What will your opinion mean then?
