On more nail was hammered into the coffin of the DVD rental store, as Netflix, the online TV and film streaming service, launched in the UK.

Netflix today launched unlimited film and TV streaming for £5.99 a month, with free access this month as a trial offering.

Your new Netflix subscription will work on Smart TVs, games consoles, Blu-ray players, laptops, tablets and mobile phones.

Netflix took its time getting to the UK. It was launched in 1997 and already has 20 million streaming members in 47 countries and territories.

The company's launch highlights are listed as The Princess Bride, Breaking Bad, Torchwood, The Only Way Is Essex and Top Gear.

An in-depth and seriously enjoyable catalogue will set Netflix apart from LoveFilm. The current catalogue for the UK has not yet been revealed, but in the US the streaming library is described by AP as "a mishmash patchwork of high-profile new additions, familiar favorites and stray oddities."

Netflix will go head to head with LoveFilm in the battle for your pound, which will hopefully been competitive pricing and film offerings from both services.

As with seemingly everything these days, Netflix is integrated with Facebook, so mind what you watch.

Britons are spoiled for choice with ways to view TV and film online. Options now include include hyper social Zeebox which received a huge investment today from BSkyB, Xbox Live, the BBC iPlayer and ITV player.

Will you take up a trial subscription? Or is freeview and iPlayer enough TV for your household?

I think it is a fantastic app. Great for streaming on my galaxy s2 I9100. Varied and good selection. Using ifttt recipe to get email notifications of new movies on the app is wicked!

Is there really anything good to watch these days? Even my Sky subscription is a rip off with the content shown.

We pay enough already so sod paying out even more. Going to the Cinema is not cheap by any shorts means and having paid an average of £10 to see a film I feel that I've contributed enough into the pockets of actors and the film industry's bank accounts. So even better is Isohunt.com (bit torrent PSP) - It's free and simple to use, but ensure you have good internet security and anti virus protection. And you can keep and store what you get and build up a library.

Really decent choice of films and TV compared to Lovefilm. Very good price and HD. Certainly worth checking it out for free.

poor choice of films/tv shows, really slow at working... I canceled my free trial about an hour after joining...

Pudding and proof! I thought Netflix streaming was extremely slow too and had nothing to do with my computer capabilities or connections, I could have watched a 2 hour movie twice over before the streaming completed.
