London 2012 Olympics: Tickets Resale Site Goes Live (Again)

London Olympics Resale Site Goes Live But Tickets Won't Be Available Till April

The website set up to allow the public to resell their London 2012 Olympics tickets opens again at 15:00 GMT on 17 January, after crashing during the first round of resales earlier this month.

Despite the reopening of the website, people will not be able to buy tickets to Olympics events until April, as official Games organisers will first buy tickets back, before selling them on.

London 2012 Organising Committee's (Locog) commercial director Christ Townsend said "We believe this system - purchasing the tickets back from customers now, and offering them again from April, will result in a better customer experience for everyone."

The tickets will be bought at “face value” until 18:00 GMT on 3 February. The site, run by Ticketmaster, was forced to close during the first resale, as there were problems updating events’ availability, the site’s time delay meaning that spaces were still showing even though tickets that had already been resold. The site closed that day.

Townsend apologised for the inconvenience and added: "We made a commitment to our customers to give them a safe, secure and legal way of selling Olympic and Paralympic tickets which they are no longer able to use. We are delivering on that commitment, and will buy any tickets that customers are no longer able to use.”

Ticketing problems have marred the 2012 Olympics. The site slowed down on the first day of sales as thousands logged on to buy tickets.

A glitch on the site meant that during the second round of sales many believed they had been successful in purchasing tickets, only to find out the next day that they had not been charged and would not receive tickets.

A third blunder meant that thousands of tickets to watch synchronised swimming at the London Olympics 2012 were sold by mistake, after human error meant 20,000 was typed into the ticket data entry box instead of 10,000. Ticket buyers were offered tickets to watch their second or third choice of event instead.

It is a criminal offence to resell tickets through any channel apart from the official LOCOG website.
