Costa Concordia: Captain Francesco Schettino's Wife Says 'He's Not A Monster'

Francesco Schettino

The wife of disgraced Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino has defended her husband in an interview with an Italian weekly magazine, saying he had been made a "scapegoat".

Fabiola Russo, 48, said Schettino had been turned into a villain by the media, portrayed as a "monster".

“My husband is at the centre of an unprecedented global media storm," Rossi told Oggi (Today).

"Who is at sea sails, who is on soil judges.

"I cannot think of any other naval or air tragedy in which the responsible party was treated with such violence... This is a manhunt, people are looking for a scapegoat, a monster. It's shameful."

However Russo admitted it was not the first time that Schettino had been reckless whilst driving a boat. She revealed that he was once fined for passing too close to the coast whilst driving a motorboat on holiday.

Despite the disaster, she said that Schettino was renowned for his in-depth understanding of naval matters, revered by his crew, “as a point of reference and a teacher.”

She explained that although her husband may seem bold, it is only because his intelligence makes him able to put down his opponent. He is often “a cut above” the other party which makes him seem cheeky, she told Oggi.

Meanwhile, Russo spoke of concern for their 17-year-old daughter: “No one had any scruples or regard for her” she said.

“No one, before judging (the Captain), thought that she would turn on the TV, newspapers, and read social networks. She is a teenager. At her age, even when everything is going OK there are thousands of quandaries. It’s impossible to expect her to have the strength to handle it all.”

Francesco Schettino is currently under house arrest awaiting to appear in court charged with causing a shipwreck, abandoning ship and multiple counts of manslaughter. The disaster has claimed 16 lives while 17 passengers and crew are still missing.

However she says the family pray together at home, and she knows she will be fine.

“I am the wife of a sailor, I am used to getting on by by myself. I confront situations and resolve them.”

So this guy is basically the Newt Gingrich of Ship Captains.
03:21 on 27/01/2012
Id have to say he did what his mind could do. for that he will never sail again. I wonder if all Captains would stay on a sinking ship if he sees theres no way to help anymore. But the " I slipped into a lifeboat" was the dumbest excuse. Just say you panicked. Thwe world would someday forgive you for being human not a coward. Accidents happen people die. We want sudeways skyscrapers in the oeans, we get what happens when they go down. It took alot of men to oversee that ships running and the captain isnt always steering the ship. in fact from what have seen they are mingling with guests more than steering the ship. Give the guy a break. Yes people died. Do we blame ourselves for killing millions of people in wars we instigate? for oil?

I was speaking in terms of ordinary circumstance. Would u hold the titanic captain accountable? i dont. under water ridges sonar misses or the guy at sonar whos supposed to be watching for underwater objects is the one u hold responsible. atleast the titanic captain had so much guilt he stayed and died. We have very few paople like that nowadays. its 1 for 1 not 1 for all mentality today. no one knows what this captain was doing at the time. if he wasnt scheduled to steer the ship, he has the rightr to have a burgandy or 2. doesnt he? We need to figure out who was at the helm and sonar. but the blame clearly goes on the sonar guy. We can blame the captain for not sticking it out on the ship sure. he wont go to jail but he wont be in charge of another oceanliner thats for sure. and if hes found to have higher than average levels of anything in his sytem yeah he could be held accountable but again it takes several people to scre up enough to sink on ocean liner. didnt he say something caused him to steer off course for a moment? it will all come out if he doesnt kill himslfef first. as we americans just love to point the finger and guilty before trials begin.

I don't believe he is a monster; but as a pilot who had the lives of others in my hands, he is a coward. Cowardice is human and something that could overcome any of us in the wrong circumstances; but the sinking of this ship, in my opinion, is not one of those circumstances.

No he is not a monster, he is a deserter of his total reponsibilities, to which, no doubt, he is highly paid to do. Those people who lost their lives put their faith and trust in this mans responsibility, he let them down badly never to forget either.......Only he will know the real truth what he did, and to that end he will suffer........

If Captain Chicken Little did not sink the ship who did? AS captain it is his responsibility to make sure All pasengers are safe. His wife should just keep her mouth shut. She is not helping herself or their daughter. With all the attention this has been getting his lawyer will say he will not get a fair trial. His wife should be concerned with the dead and their families. How about the missing. This is really shamefull.

your husband sank a ship, caused the deaths of innocent people.
17:16 on 26/01/2012
, and failed to organize and lead evacuations on board, and lied and refused to get back on the ship when ordered to do so.

That is your opinion. You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your INFORMED opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant.
10:23 on 01/02/2012
Yes I agree with you too! Maybe he's not a monster but an irrespnsible person who will need to be held accountable for his actions. He too will also have to answer to those he let down.
20:19 on 25/01/2012
he may not be a monster but he is a coward

'He is often “a cut above” the other party which makes him seem cheeky'

What planet is she on? She should listen to the tape of the conversation with the lifeguard. Yeah, sure, your husband really told that guy, Mrs. Schettino...
01:17 on 26/01/2012
Coastguard not lifeguard AlanDente. You should listen to the entire conversation, not the edited version, in certain respects the coastguard officer made some fundamental mistakes and that's the opinion of maritime experts.

Ha, I misspoke. In my defence, I've been on a lot of diazepam!

My point was that her husband was far from being a cut above the coastguard. I didn't say the coastguard was a hero.

To listen to the entire conversation I'd have to speak Italian. I don't, very well.

Hes being scapgoated for his own stupid actions???? Leaving people on a sinking ship to die I wonder is she would be so compassionate towards him if she was the mother of that young girl who is still missing was she 5 or 6 years old all because he wanted to show of by driving the boat to close to shaw to wave at friends. Save your sympathy for the poor familys who still have family members missing and the poor mother of that little girl whos husband is still also missing. At least her coward of a husband is still alive and safe unlike those he left to die.
