Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Donates $750m To Global Fund To Fight Aids, Tuberculosis And Malaria

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is donating $750m through his charitable foundation to the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Gates used the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and the 10th anniversary of the Global Fund to make his announcement.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had already contributed $650m to the Global Fund, which is one of the world's largest funders of treatment and prevention for three of the developing world's most virulent diseases.

"These are tough economic times, but that is no excuse for cutting aid to the world's poorest," said Gates. "The Global Fund is one of the most effective ways we invest our money every year."

Gates gave the funds through a 'promissory note', which is a mechanism that gives the Global Fund greater flexibility to distribute it more quickly around the world.

"By supporting the Global Fund, we can help to change the fortunes of the poorest countries in the world," said Gates. "I can't think of more important work."

Since 2002 the Global Fund says it has financed 1000 programs in 150 countries, saving an estimated 100,000 lives every month.

In his fourth 'annual letter', released yesterday, Gates said that the amount spent on development was still relatively small but had made an impact on billions of people.

"The relatively small amount of money invested in development has changed the future prospects of billions of people," Gates wrote. "And it can do the same for billions more if we make the choice to continue investing in innovation."

These are both worthy causes but how about putting more money into education, homless shelters, etc here in the US? Maybe you already have but we don't hear about it? cjsim

You begrudge the Gates's for helping people who have nothing? We here in the US have so much, even the poor, compared to most of the world. Tsk, shame on you.

Why does Bill Gates give all that money to contribute to over-population and Global Warming -
and a future of misery for so many there of in the coming decades? I thought he was a much smarter man.

So, the liberal cure to over-population and Global Warming is to let people die? How about you going first.

The middle class financed this phony gift. The Bush tax cuts give him 500 million dollars a year.

and look at the good the bush tax cuts is doing in this one case. 500 million in tax breaks and 750 million in donations. So the other 250 million came from where?

Bill and Melinda Gates are making a noble gesture with this and other donations/contributions.

Any money donated is money given to him by the middle class through the Bush tax cuts: $86,000,000 a year for a billionaire. Multiply that by 60 his worth.

THAT'S OUR MONEY. So much for phony philanthropy.

Typical flawed logic of the left

-money given to him by the middle class through the Bush tax cuts-

Tax cuts are not taxpayer money given to a person or company - tax cuts are allowing the person who earned the money to keep more of THEIR OWN MONEY
14:14 on 26/01/2012
Esther who never gave a dime to anyone dares to condemn the left when it's socialist Bill Gates who deserves the scorn.

Bill stop giving them more money, they will just make more mouths to feed which cause more poverty. Focus on condoms or tell them not to marry. Bill you fail to see the cause and keep dealing with the effects

Bravo!
But,this is the trump card.
If you do not educate about the world's need for population reduction all your good works will, soon be ineffective.
Love to play a couple of rubbers with you and Warren sometime.

Atheist donates enough money to save over a million lives in ten years. That’s pretty awesome.

But come on atheist hating christians; where is all the anti-atheist rhetoric? Bill here is an atheist, so where are the claims of selfishness, debauchery, immorality, devilish behaviour and a chaotic, spiteful, hedonistic hatred of humanity? Because that’s about all I hear of on a pretty durn regular basis. We’re inherently evil, right?
15:30 on 26/01/2012
God bless Bill Gates. Whether he believes in him or not. God can put the spirit of giving even into an atheist heart. Look at all the lives it affects.

Money dumping to clear his conscious.

Mass producing products off the Chinese worker and over pricing them/selling them worldwide probably leaves one feeling rather guilty. Over compensating and dumping the guilt/shame in the form of tax deductable donations.

Next time, put it into America schools or infrastructure. The roadways are crumbling and your products are being shipped en mass to stores across America, reinvest here at home. High speed rail would be awesome if you're taking requests, too bad America is going to backwards instead of forwards....

I see a future where there's no more school buses, and children are riding to wooden house schools in the back of horse drawn wagons covered in cow hide. That's the type of America the GoP wants, just like Laura Ingalls had! I think I just heard a wolf howl in the distance, must be a sign.

He does put it into the American school system, have you ever paid attention to all the foundations him and his wife participate in?

It's fine if he wants to give money to prevent these illnesses, but is he giving money to family planning? Because if not, there will be more and more people competing for limited resources and often miserable lives.

It's like Mother Theresa... she cared for the poor but encouraged them to have more and more children, thus insuring there was always an overpopulation problem and all the tragedy associated with it.

It is his money-- well, also Warren Buffett's money-- and it is good he is trying to do something worthwhile with it. Trying to help the sinking middle class here, and the poor, would also be nice. Or supporting a third party candidate so that we can re-establish our democracy would be wonderful for folks in this country.

I'm sorry if this donation strategy hurts you.....

Leave it to a left winger to complain about someone giving away nearly $1 trillion dollars of their own money to benefit the less fortunate who need it most.
