Gary Speed Inquest: Louise Speed Tells Coroner Former Wales Boss Had Talked Of Suicide

Gary Speed sent a text to his wife days before he died in which he "talked in terms of taking his life", his widow told an inquest into the former Wales Manager's death.

Louise Speed also revealed that there was "some degree of stress" on their relationship.

Speed, who played for Sheffield United, Everton, Newcastle, Leeds and Bolton, was discovered hanged at his home near Chester last November,

The text was revealed at an inquest at Warrington Coroner's Court into the death of the 42-year-old father of two.

After hearing evidence from Sheffield United's medical officer, Dr Mark Ridgewell, in which he said Speed had “no history of depression,” Speed's widow took to the stand.

She said that her husband was a “deep man" who “didn’t relish the limelight”, adding that Speed was fine after he returned from an appearance on Football Focus the day before his death.

They then had “an exchange” in the early hours after they had been to a dinner party at a friend's house, she said.

Mrs Speed said she had driven off in her car around 1.15am.

It was the last time she saw her husband alive, she told the coroner.

She returned shortly after but the house was locked. According to the witness, she fell asleep, waking up at 6am, after which she went around the side of the house.

Giving evidence through tears, the widow told how she discovered her husband’s body in the garage.

She tried to resuscitate him, she told the coroner.

The court heard that Speed had not left a suicide note.

Speed's widow ended her testimony by revealing that her husband had talked of taking his life, but she "dismissed it", saying that he was "excited" about the future with his wife and two sons.

Mrs Speed said the text referred to their "ups and downs" but went on about "how important the boys were" and about "moving forward".

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the former footballer's death.

Following news of his death, tributes poured in from around the world for Speed.

A public memorial service to celebrate his life is planned for later this year.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has also said that the national team's game against Costa Rica on February 29 will be dedicated to their former manager.

The FAW appointed Chris Coleman as the new manager of Wales earlier this month after what they admitted had been "a very difficult period" following the death.

In a narrative verdict, Cheshire coroner Nicholas Rheinberg gave the cause of death as hanging but said "the evidence does not sufficiently determine whether this was intentional or accidental".

Something doesnt make sense here. His wife when asked what did you row about states "Something Trivia" but doesnt elaborate as to what. Nobody storms out of the house for "Something Trivia" furthermore why havent the full contents of text messages during this period been disclosed. I am sure the police have already studied these and maybe something of a private nature which would possibly reflect badly on her has been concealed to protect her from public anger. ???????????????

You got that right. Why is it that these spouses are suspiciously reportedly absent at time of death? Knew about problems but did nothing to intervene, yet claim to be so broken up about the demise?

Lol, I have to laugh at that comment, "Not sure if he hung himself intentionally or by accident!!! How do you accidentally hang yourself with rop from what i presume was the ceiling of the garage. Beats me some of these verdicts.

Several comments have said that it seems that the coroner was being "compassionate" by not ruling a suicide verdict and saying it may have been accidental. If that is the case then why bother with an inquest, a lot of public money wasted and emotional stress for the family - for nothing. Just one judge being compassionate and ignoring the blatently obvious.

Seriously, it's time.

Being compassionate to the point of making a life-insurance payout possible.

I'm not seeing how to accidentally climb on a chair in the garage, accidentally tie a rope around your neck, and then accidentally kick the chair away.

I agree.
12:01 AM on 01/31/2012
My thoughts exactly.
Accidently tied rope, accidently standing on a chair with a noose around your neck, accidently taking the whatever..
i wonder if the insurance company involved will accidently pay out?

My son did the same as Gary just over 12 months ago, he left my house on the afternoon the last thing he said to me was that he was doing some Christmas shopping the next morning then he would be round for his dinner, i never saw him again. He had been making so many plans for his future. I received a text message at 3-23am to say he was sorry but he couldn't do this any more i immediately rang 999 then threw some clothes on and drove to his house i did the journey in just over 5 minutes the police and paramedic were already there but it was too late. The amount of times I've gone over what if this and what if that, did he have it planned when he left my house that afternoon, the questions i want answering can't ever be. My son went out with some friends on the night before he died, they said he was his normal self and they went their separate ways at 2am and he told them he was off home to his bed so what happened between 2am and 3-23 I'll never know, I knew he'd been depressed he was seeing his GP, a counsellor and a psychiatrist and was sounding very positive about his future, he hid what he was really feeling so well. Outside I can put on a face that people think I'm ok but inside I'll never be the same

so sad, I am a parent and do feel so sorry for you, nothing I can do or say will make it better for you, I wish I could.

My heart aches for you.............my nephew did the same in June..he was 23....everything to live for..............the devastation left behind is unrepairable....Life for his family is a daily struggle now.......It was just a moment of madness.....its the wondering why...and the pain that never goes away....x

I just heard on the BBC news that he was found hanged. Very sad that someone resorts to that not seeing another way out, but how can such an act be 'accidental' AOL?
05:31 AM on 01/31/2012
Thats what I said, bit difficult to hang yourself without intent I feel.

Please, please Huff remove this from the front page and if possible from the website.

Allow the family some privacy - it must be extremely painful for family an friends to see these headlines...

The family don't have to read this crap!

This is a prime example of unpleasant, prurient interest in the most private possible matters...the headline is particularly cheap.

Something doesn't quite sit right with me. 1, if you wanted to kill yourself would you advertise the fact. ( who sent the message from his phone?), 2, is it just a coinsidence that the time he was doing the deed his wife had decided to kip in the car! and 3, everyone he mixed with said he was in good spirits and making plans for the future. Or am I just being a conspiracy theorist?

You dont put a rope round your neck ,when you are on your own ,and swing from it if you dont expect to die

This is a strange verdict.Compassion maybe but I believe insurance companies don`t pay out on suicide verdict`s.

He was a model professional, a guy who didn't like the limelight, very refreshing, he was our 'rock' in midfield at Newcastle United.
