The Duchess of Cambridge has made a private visit to her addiction charity to meet alcohol and drug users being successfully treated by the organisation.

Kate travelled to a treatment centre run by Action on Addiction in Wiltshire to meet staff and recovering addicts yesterday as she continues to learn about the body's work.

The royal became patron of the charity in the New Year when three other patronages were also announced and her decision to become a volunteer with the Scout Association.

Kate is using her time alone, while her husband William is in the Falkland Islands working as an RAF search and rescue helicopter co-pilot, getting first hand knowledge about the work of her organisations.

A St James's Palace spokesman said: "She visited the charity's headquarters yesterday in Wiltshire, one of a number of ongoing private visits to her charities.

"The Duchess is getting to know more about what the charities do and meet the staff and those they help."

The royal met staff at Clouds House in East Knoyle near Salisbury - a former private residence set in beautiful parkland where addicts are treated.

Many go through detox when they arrive then start a 12-step programme of intensive counselling.

Action on Addiction helps people with a range of addictions at its treatment centres across England and also supports their families, commissions research and trains people to be addictions counsellors.

The Duchess' first solo public engagements were announced yesterday and she will travel to Liverpool on February 14 to learn more about the addiction charity's work in the city.

Kate will visit The Brink, an adult "dry bar" that provides food, drink and entertainment to the public but also has private areas set aside for alcohol counselling, run by Action on Addiction.

The monarchy should end when the present queen dies, her empire is already dead. It will make no difference to tourism as royal supporters will wrongly claim. It will save the UK a fortune.

What kind of monarch

....allows their nation participate in illegal war?
....allows the majority of the working population to be driven to poverty in favour of the wealthy few?
....knights people because of their wealth? (SIR Alan Sugar???? REALLY? I dont care how many people he employs in the UK, he has made a fortune selling dodgy electrical equipment that breaks down after 1 year....a great role model)
....takes from the public purse when she is already disgustingly wealthy?

this could be a long list, but to cut to the chase

Get rid of them

And your choice for Head of State would be? Miliband? Cameron? You no doubt haven't travelled much but the Queen is highly esteemed throughout the world, and coverage of the run-up to the Royal Wedding last year was on American television a lot more than here. The UK and particularly London is the most popular destination in the world, just try getting a decent hotel room even in the middle of winter. given the choice if I had to kick anybody out of the country it would be whiner and whingers such as you.

Miliband? Cameron? Nooooo

Salmond:)

As I said, royal supporters will claim that HRH brings in the money. Simply not true. London will still be popular whether the queen is monarch or not.

TBH it doesnt really matter to me. Althought she hold a title of queen of Scotland we will be rid of them soon enough. Alex wont keep her for long.

Since when could anything the Royals do be classed as 'work'?
With the massive, grotesque allowances they get, and pampered lifestyle, you can put me down for the same kind of work..Somehow methinks the dole office has none of those kind of openings, for the likes of you and me!
