UK Weather: Britain Has Coldest Winter Night So Far

Britain has endured its coldest night of the winter so far with temperatures plummeting close to -18C in some areas, forecasters said.

The record-breaking cold snap comes as families setting off on half-term getaways have been warned of "deceptively dangerous" road conditions.

Experts said the mercury had fallen to -17.8C in Chesham, Bucks, during the early hours and was expected to plunge even lower as the icy weather continues to grip the UK.

Claire Allen, forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "Overnight we have had the coldest temperatures this winter so far. Most places in England and eastern areas of Wales dropped to below -4C, with -5.8C at Heathrow and -5.5C in Nottingham. Motorists are going to have to be extra cautious in areas where there is still snow remaining as it will be frozen making the roads very icy and slippery."

The Met Office said it had probably been the coldest night in England since December 2010 with temperatures widely below -10C across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

A "yellow" severe weather warning instructing people to "be aware" of ice on roads has been issued by the national weather service across the whole of England and parts of Wales. A level three cold weather alert is also in place.

Ms Allen said the bitter temperatures would continue with London, south-eastern areas and the Midlands struggling to get above freezing. Most areas should be dry and sunny, but cloud, rain and freezing drizzle could hit western parts of Britain, she added.

Scotland and Northern Ireland escaped the adverse temperatures overnight thanks to a warm front, with readings of between 5C and 10C expected today.

Saturday night is also forecast to be bitterly cold in England with temperatures in London and the Midlands falling to around -6C while milder temperatures are likely on Sunday.

With thousands of families expected to embark on half-term getaways this weekend, the AA cautioned drivers to take extra care, especially if travelling to mainland Europe, where they face the risk of "frozen" diesel. President Edmund King said: "There are still treacherous conditions on many local roads around the country. We found that even on local roads that had been gritted, the rain washed off the grit and turned to sheet ice."

Its been an average of -30 in St.Petersburg this last week, but the roads are sound, take a lesson all you crap drivers, sell your 4x4 Chelsea tractors .... that you havn't got a clue how to operate, and use public transport ! (50 of you numpties off the road is about equall to China's total carbon footprint anyway) Please just stay indoors until summer .... and if that doesn't come ..... just stay indoors.

Wow, it's cold. Shock, horror, what do people expect, it is winter after all.Yes we hear about people who cannot drive sensibly in poor conditions and we have reports from parts of the country that have had a dusting of snow. But it's almost as though it is a new type of weather. I'm sure it snows in the Arctic and in Antarctica but we don't need to know about it. For heck's sake before we started having weather forecasts everyone was aware of the seasons and what they brought i.e bad weather for winter, heat for summer, and they would get food in the larders in preparation for winter and do work on their homes in the summer. They didn't need being told to drink extra in the summer to avoid becoming dehydrated. We seem to have lost our intelligence in this country. The peoples of Siberia don't need to be told that winter comes at a similar time each year and brings with it the same weather (cold and snowy.)
And can someone answer me this. Why do some drivers need to be told the obvious by the AA and RAC every year about clearing all windows, using lights and slow down in bad weather? Surely these are as I stated obvious?

Get the outside condensing pipe lagged- or have it moved inside the house and vented at it's lowest point. May cost a few quid but you will never have this problem again.
PS- dont mess about with a hairdryer- pour a kettle full of boiling water over the outside pipe!

Cold now?
Where Iwas brought up we had a saying.
'nere cast a clout till March is out'
Meaning to keep wearing your warm stuff as March can be very cold
06:22 PM on 02/11/2012
I think the saying is "cast nere a clout 'till May is out", actually meaning the May blossom on trees.
Gives you a bit longer to stay wrapped up warm.
01:00 AM on 02/12/2012
You may think that the word is May, where I come from it was March.
Geography counts
06:24 PM on 02/11/2012
Thought it was 'May' is out, but could be mistaken! The 'clout' evidently, referred to an overcoat - and I believe is a northern England saying (they have it cold up there). However, last November I was going out in a tee shirt, and come March will be going out in thermals - the seasons are def changing and it has NOTHING to do with global warming!
07:02 PM on 02/11/2012
Yes the clought is clothing

Hopefully the coldest bits are over another few weekks and Spring will be upon us once again
