Simon Cowell has been hailed a hero for offering his private jet to a Britain's Got Talent crew member whose pregnant girlfriend went into early labour.

Sound recorder John Hagenstede was shooting the latest round of auditions in Edinburgh, Scotland when he found out his partner Lisa Stewart was getting ready to welcome their first child nearly two weeks before her due date.

John panicked when he couldn't find a quick flight back to Caterham, Surrey, where his partner had been rushed to hospital in an ambulance.

He told the Daily Express: "Lisa wasn't due for another 12 days so I was shocked to get the call and desperately wanted to get back to Surrey to be with her.

"We looked up every possible option of getting me home and I was devastated when I realised the only option was waiting and getting a flight in the morning. I knew I would miss the birth."

However, Simon swooped in to the rescue by offering the 44-year-old a ride back to England on his plush plane so he wouldn't miss the birth.

John jetted into Luton airport with Simon and his fellow BGT judges David Walliams and Alesha Dixon, and was even treated to a chauffeur ride to the hospital in the nick of time to see the birth of his son Jude Berkeley Hagenstede on Sunday.

He adds: "There was a car waiting for Simon and the others and another one that he had laid on for me. Simon said: 'Congratulations to you and your girlfriend and I hope it goes well.'

"I just wanted to keep thanking him - I was over the moon... He's such a beautiful child. I thought it was near impossible that I would get to see the birth but I got here with just minutes to spare.

"If it hadn't been for Simon and his plane I would have missed the whole thing. Hats off to him."

Guess he's not so Mr. Nasty after all!

Simon always does well and not a surprise for him to do such a thing. I think they should also have a week early on that the contestants vote on each other...:) JTD

I do not think that Simon Cowell gives a flying fig to what a lot of losers think of him. He is famous and rich and has worked very hard for it. Most of the nasty comments about him are just jealousy by people who are lazy.

Why would any one be jealous of a TV muppet. Work hard yeah ! yeah ! Hard work is picking rice for a living or carrying 10 gallons of minging water 20 miles a day across a desert. Simon Cowell would not know hard work if it hit him in the face, yacking all day on the phone and inviting star struck loosers into a studio and then bullying & humiliating them sounds like really hard work LMAO !

if someone with no talent goes onto his shows trying to use it as a quick way to get fame and fortune and Simon says they are rubbish he is not to blame, it is them for going on there in the first place. Delusions of grandeur. I recently advertised a job as a gardener and a job as a driver. The phone rang non stop with a load of idiots who knew nothing about gardening and could not drive.
Yet when you say that means they are not suitable they find fault in you. What sort of idiot expects you to choose him for a job as a driver if he cannot drive? These people should look to whether or not they can offer what the person is looking for and expect to be criticised if they are lacking. We would all love to be rich and famous but many of us r ealise we have no chance of it.
If you have no talent then dont pretnd yo uhave some.

Maybe however it could also be called helping someone out because he had the means to do so.Its a bit like being a t w a t .We can all be one but does not mean we have to.

Inviting star struck loosers into a studio and then bullying & humiliating them sounds like the definition of being a T W A T !

It makes a pleasant change to hear of someone helping someone else out. Well done Simon. We need more examples of the rich using their wealth to help their workers. Without the workers the rich would not be rich.

Simon Cowell does a hell of a lot of nice things and supports many charities, he just doesn't shout about it - not good for his Mr Nasty image.
