The body of a woman found 30ft up an oak tree in Australia has been identified as a missing American tourist.

The decomposing remains of Melissa Joy Dietzel were discovered by a Sydney tree surgeon after residents complained of a foul smell coming from the tree.

According to police, the death is being treated as a suicide, although it is unknown how the 22-year-old’s body came to be in the tree.

There had been speculation the Californian was homeless and living in the tree but that has since been dismissed, the Daily Mail said.

Dietzel, who arrived in Australia in October or November, had been working as a live-in nanny but was let go by the family she had been working for. According to reports, Dietzel's employers became concerned after she began to behave strangely and complained she was was hearing voices.

Dietzel’s body is believed to have been in the tree for around two weeks before it was discovered, news.com.au reported.

An anonymous friend told the Sydney Morning Herald: “She was big about the outdoors so she was stoked about being in Australia. She was the one that cheered everyone up and talked to everyone.”

Another friend paid tribute to Dietzel on Facebook, writing: “She always made me smile when I was having a horrid day. She also gave fabulous hugs. Sometimes it's the little things that matter the most.”

Perhaps she was already out of her tree when she was found up the tree, if that makes any sense.

What a shame such a young life is lost for no apparent reason

Mental illness is a reason. Unfortunately.

This must be a terrible time for you and your family, may you find the answers and at least some form of peace from his terrible tragedy.

I am Melissa's father. Melissa was not kicked out to the street and I assure you that the host family did do all they could to have her treated, but she refused any treatment. She was not homeless. She left them to go and stay with another friend.

Please do not jump to conclusions. If you have questions, feel free to post them here and I will answer them.

Thank you.

Mr Gunther, my heart and prayers go out to you and your family, some posts on here are suggesting that your daughter took her own life, i'm not one of them. My son took his own life in 2010, I knew he had suffered from depression and was on anti-depressants, he spent 6 months in S. Africa where friends of his over there were really concerned about his mental health, one of his friends even made an appointment to see a psychiatrist but he refused to go. Some people making comments on here say that the host family should have made your daughter get help but, if, like my son she refused to go there's nothing they could have done. It wasn't till after my son died that I found out that my son's GP thought my son was bi-polar and had referred him to a psychiatrist to do tests to see if he was. My son didn't tell us how ill he really was, he had mood swings, but we just thought it was because he didn't like his job, he was also divorced, he had his own home and when he was really low he would stay in bed, these are things we only found out after he had died. People have said to us that we'll get over it but the day my precious son died part of me died too I will always blame myself for not realising how ill my son was

Large annimals often kill their prey then
drag the carcase up a tree, fact.

Reminds me when the US army gave their soldiers "LSD" in the sixties as an experiment. Many climbed trees laughing and thought they could fly.
Wouldn't have thought psychotic behaveour just came on in the time she was there .Possibly she had ran out of medication.Maybe her family can confirm she already had a mental illness rather than blame the Aussie family she worked for

It sounds like her family had noticed sleep disturbances prior to her leaving to Australia (one of the signs of bipolar disorder), but that she was dismissive when they brought up their concerns. Further, it is not uncommon for psychotic behavior to be triggered by stressors; in her case, a big life change (moving to Australia). Several people in her family have committed suicide, but no one expected this from her. I have never known her to be anything other than extremely happy, outgoing, and loving. Everyone who knows her is in total shock.

I knew a young man who took LSD, then jumped
out a two storey building, thinking he could fly.
Spent 20 yrs in a wheelchair, before he died.
Your comment is 100 per cent true

Isn't it sad, you would think they would have seen that she was having mental health problems? Like you say though, we'd need more details before reaching any conclusions.

host family should have ensured she got medical help for a start!
17:55 on 14/02/2012
If I were to hire a foreign au pair and she became mentally ill, I would move heaven and earth to ensure she got appropriate care, not just kick her out onto the street. The employer, in this case a family, had a duty of care to their employee which they possibly failed in- without further information I wouldn't want top judge but it doesn't look great on them. Would you expect the employer to have offered some care for the young woman in their employ if she's been suffering from pneumonia? That she suffered from a mental illness rather than a physical one is not really the point, although obviously people react to mental illnesses by stigmatizing the sufferer and assuming they are a danger to others.
